A statement from Indiana Utility Consumer Counselor Abby Gray regarding the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission’s AES Indiana rate decision:

“The AES rate order issued today is an outrage and Hoosiers deserve better! Governor Braun has made it clear that ratepayer affordability is a priority, far more than just a “hot topic” as described by the Chairman of the IURC today. This order fails the Governor’s call to overhaul how utilities are regulated in order to lower bills for ratepayers. My office recommended denial and a rate reduction that would have benefited ratepayers and ensured shareholders paid their fair share of costs. The order approves a substantial profit margin for shareholders in addition to a rate increase for customers. It even requires ratepayers to pay approximately $3 million to AES lawyers and experts. The Governor bestowed a great honor on me in trusting me to advocate for ratepayers and affordability. I take that responsibility seriously and will continue to fight for Hoosiers at every opportunity.”

“I greatly appreciate the opportunity to participate in Tuesday’s meeting. The Chairman’s invitation for me to not only attend but participate in the inquiry ensured a variety of perspectives and a thorough questioning of the five major investor-owned utilities. The regulatory process works best when everyone participates, and this is why I am encouraging consumers to attend the IURC’s listening sessions or provide written public comments to [email protected]. It is essential that customers speak up! We all must work together to advocate for affordable, transparent bills.” – Indiana Utility Consumer Counselor Abby Gray
