Honolulu police shut down an illegal gambling operation in Kakaako after executing a search warrant on a property on Kawaiahao Street. During the raid, officers recovered 19 gaming machines and more than $7,000 in cash. Police said this was the department’s 19th illegal gambling search warrant executed in 2026 and the third in June alone. Officials say cracking down on illegal gambling helps prevent related criminal activity and improves community safety, and they encourage the public to report suspected illegal gambling operations.

A 47 year old Jonesboro, Arkansas man is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say he forged 13 checks totaling $10,700 in his girlfriend’s name and deposited them into his bank account to fund online gambling. According to police, the checks were written from his girlfriend’s closed bank account without her knowledge, and surveillance footage reportedly showed him making the deposits at ATMs. During an interview with investigators, he allegedly admitted to signing the checks because he wanted to pay for online gambling without his girlfriend finding out. He is being held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 21.

A proposed North Carolina state budget would make several major changes to sports betting by increasing the tax on sports betting operators from 18% to 23%, introducing a 6% tax on prediction market operators, and allowing bettors to deduct gambling losses from their state income taxes retroactive to Jan. 1, 2025. The proposal would also change how sports betting tax revenue is distributed, allowing UNC, NC State, Appalachian State, Charlotte, and East Carolina to receive up to $5.8 million annually beginning in 2027 to help offset rising athletic costs. Supporters say the changes will provide additional funding for schools and public programs, while industry representatives warn higher taxes could push some bettors toward illegal gambling options.

Not only would the tax on sports betting operators rise to 23%, but North Carolina would levy taxes on prediction market operators as well under proposals expected to be included in the state budget.
