Next Central Committee meeting will be July 26th. We would like to go back to in person meetings and take advantage of the summer weather by having our meetings outdoors. Any recommendations for a park with a shelter in Norwalk we can utilize? August's meeting would be in the Carlisle area. And September would be in the southern part of the county. BYOF (bring your own food) and we can eat together before the meeting? Let's hear your suggestions!

What can we do about the Pate Purge?

The New Iowa Project isn’t sharing doom and gloom just for the sake of sharing doom and gloom. This is an absolute mess, but the timing is right for us to help start fixing it. Literally the night before all this news broke, our April monthly meeting featured a training from Deb Hansen of the Independents and Inactives Committee on how to reach out to inactive voters. A list of all the inactive voters in Iowa was added to our New Iowa Resource Library that week and we sent it out to every county chair and local group leader in the state. That training was recorded and added to the library for everyone to view. We included scripts for calls and postcard efforts as well.

Many of you have asked whether the inactive voters on that April list should still be contacted. They absolutely should. That list DOES NOT include the voters inactivated in Paul Pate’s April purge. As we noted before, we will allow his state office and the county auditors to contact the 294,148 Iowa voters he inactivated over the next few weeks. We will request a new list later this month and send out a new and much bigger list out to everyone again at that time.

A silver lining in all this is that volunteers in more than 50 counties have now reviewed the New Iowa Project training on contacting inactive voters, utilized the list of inactive voters in their counties, and downloaded the scripts for reaching out to them by phone and mail. Many counties have since completed their entire lists, but the Buchanan County Democrats were the first county to finish theirs in the first 24 hours. We’ve never seen so many county parties and local groups across the state working together on a single project. We’re hoping that it’s the first of many going forward.

Not part of the Iowa Project yet or need access to the Resource Library for the lists, scripts, and training? Just email us at [email protected] and we'll get you started!

The new Republican election law knocked off 276,836 Active voter registrations in Iowa this past month, moving most to Inactive status. A fifth of all No Party voters lost their Active registration

"The Iowa Secretary of State’s office moved thousands of Iowans who did not vote in the 2020 general election to “inactive” status this month.

But according to Linn County Auditor Joel Miller, a recent “No Activity” mailing from the state went to at least three groups of voters who should not have received it. Consequently, state officials “incorrectly inactivated” hundreds of voters in Linn County alone."

New Iowa law limits early and absentee voting

DES MOINES - Gov. Kim Reynolds on Monday signed into law sweeping legislation that will significantly alter Iowa's elections by reducing the number of days for early voting, restricting absentee voting and threatening county auditors with fines and jail time if they break the new requirements.

New voter registration numbers are out from the Iowa Secretary of State and there’s some good and some bad in there.

There are more Democrats than Republicans in the First, Second, and Third Congressional Districts. Actually, Independents even outnumber Republicans in both the First and Second.

There are 688,356 Democrats, 715,363 Republicans, and 673,619 Independents statewide. That means we need to register a little more than 27,000 more Democrats to catch up.

It also means that something is off in Iowa politics. Democrats and Republicans are neck and neck in registration, but our legislature sure doesn’t look like it.

A new focus on registration and turnout and purposeful engagement with Independent and inactive voters can help rebalance us to the truly purple state we all remember.

Want A State Legislature That Likes To Meddle With Higher Education? Move To Iowa

While state legislators frequently show a penchant for bills that would enable them to increase their oversight, pinch the purse strings, and tighten the screws on public universities, the Iowa General Assembly is reaching new heights of legislative overreach this year.
