Never forget “The Forgotten War”

Today, in Iowa, we celebrate Korean War Remembrance Day. Please see the attached Governor's Proclamation that proclaims July 27, 2020 as " Korean War Remembrance Day ", and we urge our citizens to reflect this important observance throughout our state in their own way.

On July 27, 1953 the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed, to "ensure a complete cessation of the hostilities and all acts of armed force in Korea until a final peace settlement is achieved." As we are often reminded, we still await that final peace.

We honor and support those 85,314 Iowans who served, and their families. We're eternally grateful to the 508 Iowans who made the ultimate, supreme sacrifice in one of the most tragic events of our time. We will never waiver in our commitment to fully account for the captured and missing - our POW's and MIA's - nor will we ever stop striving to give our veterans the care and opportunities they so rightly have earned.

Based on the current situation with the COVID-19 virus in Iowa, and specifically, the increased health risks many of our Iowa Korean War Veterans face with it, the Iowa Korean War Veterans Association, has decided it's in the best interest of the public and participants to regretfully cancel this year's event. However, as always, please do not allow the day to be entirely forgotten within your own hearts and circles and however you choose. As a resilient people we will resume our traditional observations when conditions are more appropriate.

Seventy-four years ago today, on Sept. 2, 1945, Japan formally surrendered to Allied forces during a ceremony aboard the USS Missouri. The “Victory over Japan” officially ended World War II and was celebrated in communities across the United States. Today, we remember and honor the sacrifices of our WWII Veterans who served on the battlefield and on the home front to preserve our way of life.

Elodie Opstad is doing a presentation at the Warren County Historical Museum this coming Tuesday - Aug 27th at 7PM
She will present the story of Bob Davy’s journey through what was then Yugoslavia after his plane became disabled on a WW2 bombing mission. Bob was a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber. His story is absolutely fascinating.

Bob and the entire crew were picked up by Partisans in what is now Bosnia and taken to Belgrade, Serbia over a 9 day journey. Elodie and her husband traveled Bob’s route last spring so she will present Bob’s stories with some of his pictures and theirs of those towns, train stations and hilly terrain today. It will be a great program!

Bob’s story is truly remarkable. He is a long time post member. Would love to see lots of support from the post!

Along with other Blue Water veterans, Alfred Procopio Jr. came to believe his illnesses were caused by tactical herbicides that washed into the sea, where ships distilled water for drinking and other uses. The Institute of Medicine reported in 2011 that it was a “plausible pathway of exposure.”

“We drank it. We bathed in it. They cooked our food in it. We washed our clothes in it,” Procopio said.

Overton Funeral Home

Call 515-961-1045 for details.

This is the first in a series of articles to help our followers understand a little more about funeral service. I want to touch on a few topics that will hopefully explain what you need to know when someone has died or if you need to think about pre-arranging a service.

Our first topic will cover Veteran Services and Benefits.
The first thing you need to know is that every veteran or active duty service member man or woman is entitled to military rites free of charge. That service includes a flag to be draped over the casket or folded into a triangle to be placed in the casket or next to the urn if cremation is your choice of service. Military honors could be performed by the American Legion, V.F.W. or an active duty Honor Guard from the branch of service that they had served. The honors may be performed at the funeral home or at the cemetery. We will contact the appropriate group for the military honors as part of our service.
Second, there are veteran benefits provided to any service member man or woman who was honorably discharged and passed away in a Veterans Administration facility or is under contract from the Veterans Administration at a nursing home that is caring for a veteran. Those benefits are determined by the Veterans Administration but could be up to or over $2000.00
Third, the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, provides free of charge an in ground space or columbarium space for the veteran or active serviceman or woman. This includes the space, opening and closing of the grave or columbarium niche and the military marker. If there is a spouse, they provide at this time, the same items for $300.00.
If you would like to inquire about veterans benefits please give us a call. We will be happy to sit down and answer any of your questions.

American Legion Post 165 will be front and center with the color guard for the parade.

Due to the size and popularity of the Indianola High School Homecoming Parade last year some changes have been made to the parade route. Indianola Schools and Indianola Police worked together to come up with a solution that worked for the entire community to increase public safety and maintain a route that keeps tradition alive!

Beginning with the 2016 parade, entrants will line up east of Irving Elementary on N. D Street and wrap around west on W. Detroit Ave back towards the pool. W. Detroit Avenue will be closed at N. F Street and N. D Street will be closed too. The Irving parking lot will be used for buses to drop off participants, and parents can pick up childcare children on the south side of Irving on Clinton Street.

The route will run Clinton to Buxton, around the Square counterclockwise, then west on Salem, and north on N. F Street to finish. The parade will begin at 6pm on Thursday Sept. 29th, 2016.

A Memorial Day program will begin at the cemetery when the parade ends. We honor military members who have died in service to our country.
