Our Kids in the Kitchen campers were busy cooking, learning, and trying new things this week!

During the three-day camp, youth prepared meals while practicing hands-on kitchen skills such as peeling, chopping, measuring, using a skillet, and operating an oven. They also learned how to work safely in the kitchen, follow recipes, handle food properly, and keep their cooking spaces clean.

By the end of camp, participants had gained new skills, greater confidence, and plenty of experience working together in the kitchen.

Thank you to the Indianola Wellness Center for allowing us to host the camp, and to Senior 4-Hโ€™er Caroline Pannel for volunteering with our participants! ๐Ÿ€

We are looking for youth to complete the National 4-H Index Study survey. Your responses help show how Mississippi 4-H compares with programs across the nation and provide valuable information about the impact of 4-H.

The survey only takes a few minutes to complete:

Congratulations to our Sunflower County 4-H members who competed in the Mississippi 4-H State Shooting Sports Contest this weekend!

Cole Jobe, Drew Ferguson, Dakota Todd, and Nicholas Patterson competed in Shotgun at Capitol Gun Club in Clinton, while Cade Ferguson and Reilly Patterson competed in .22 Pistol at MLEOTA in Pearl.

This competition was especially meaningful for Drew and Cole, as it marked their final state event as 4-H members. We are proud of all six competitors for their hard work, sportsmanship, and dedication throughout the season. Great job representing Sunflower County 4-H!

Can you handle the heat?! Have you ever been in the grocery store or farmers market and wondered how hot a certain pepper was? This helpful guide breaks down the heat level of several common peppers.

The Scoville Heat Units (SHU) scale is used to measure the amount of capsaicin in peppers. Capsaicin is a chemical compound that gives peppers their heat.

So, how hot is that pepper? Hereโ€™s a list of a few common peppers and where they fall on the Scoville scale:

Bell peppers: 0 SHU
Poblano: 1,000โ€“1,500 SHU
Jalapeรฑo: 2,500โ€“5,000 SHU
Serrano: 5,000โ€“23,000 SHU
Tabasco: 30,000โ€“50,000 SHU
Cayenne: 30,000โ€“125,000 SHU
Habanero: 100,000โ€“350,000 SHU
Ghost pepper: 1,000,000 SHU

If you're interested in growing your own peppers, check out our Mississippi Vegetable Gardener's Guide Extension publication: https://extension.msstate.edu/publications/mississippi-vegetable-gardeners-guide
