Book Chat - Sci-Fi

Sept 9, 2020:
This week I have a group of sci-fi books. Now, don’t get scared off by my calling them “sci-fi”. These are not dry, old, dusty science fiction; these books have everything from sports and spies to aliens and unicorns (unicorns? In sci-fi?) They are funny, exciting, and sometimes pretty silly.

Craft: Scented paints

Is it feeling like fall? Do you want to make it smell like fall? Try these home-made SCENTED paints! They're easy to make, with stuff you probably already have at home. Raid your spice cabinet to find things that smell great. Janis used cinnamon, nutmeg, thyme, and some peppermint flavoring that was tucked way back in a corner. You might also try: cloves, rosemary, pumpkin pie spice, apple flavoring, or something else!

You'll just need:
1 c. cold water
1/4 c. flour (maybe up to 1/3 cup, if you need it a little bit thicker)
1-2 T. cornstarch
Food coloring
Your spices and flavorings

Book Chat: Middle School

Sept 2, 2020
This week we’re going back to school – middle school. These books are all about kids who find out that middle school can be a pretty wild ride. These books are great for upper-elementary and middle-school readers who want some laughs, some mystery, and some evidence that maybe they’re not the only ones dealing with middle-school weirdness.

Craft: Crescent Roll snacks!

One more "re-run" of crafts before we get into new ones in September. Watch for a craft video on the first Monday of each month, and then a SNACK video on the third Monday of each month. (Snack crafts are Janis's favorites.) In the meantime, give these crescent roll snacks from June another try. They're worth the repeat.

Janis was hungry, so we're making crescent roll pizza rolls and crescent roll pie! So tasty.

Book chat with Janis: Graphic Novels

8/26/2020: This week we’re talking about graphic novels. Um, side-note to grown-ups: these are *real* books, not “just” comic books – though there’s nothing wrong with a quick comic-book read, either. Graphic novels have stories that will satisfy almost any reader, whether you’re looking for adventure, mystery, or just some ridiculous fun.

Kudos for the Indianola Library staff! They are posting "walking books" around the parameter fo the library and changing them out frequently. I see families making this loup quite frequently on our morning jobs. Clyde, our dog, enjoys the books a lot as long as I read the copy to him.
Thank you for a great night with the Blank Park Zoo education department.
I am contacting organizations about our Child Abduction Prevention program. C.A.P. for short. I did a small course earlier this month and channel 5 came out for a short segment. I very much would like to get the information out there as I am very passionate about keeping our children safe. I would like to chat with you more about this if you're interested. I am including our video here for you to look at. Thank you for your time. Dave Nelson. 515-249-0031

SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL AGED FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS FOR AUGUST 2018 AND JANUARY 2019 I’m spending the day looking for a family to host a 16-year-old boy from China named Xingyang. Can you help me? Xingyang is described as kind, active, sporty, open, outgoing, and polite. Xingyang enjoys playing basketball, riding horses, volleyball, fishing, cooking, playing card games and watching movies. Can anyone help me in my search for a family who can open their heart and home to Xingyang We’re offering a $50.00 referral gift card or donation for the name of any family that will host him. It is through student exchange that we plant seeds of kindness and understanding while building friendships around the world. Message me if you are interested in applying to host Xingyang or if you know of another good family that might enjoy hosting him. Thank you! I’ve heard there is a create it sometime next week but I can’t find it in the events list. What day is it, and what ages is it, and is it at 330 to 415 or some other time?
