Another week, another set of Scattergories entries! New categories and starting letter are out, so come take a walk around the Library lawn and play a game while you're at it!

It was another close contest for the letter "M". Jackson Z came through for the win this week. The "things that are lost" category cracked Janis up the most, and she had to check to make sure it wasn't her kids who answered "my mother's mind". :) She also had to google "Mismagius" to make sure that that particular Pokemon is, in fact, purple. (It is.) "Malt vinegar" is definitely sour (and great with fries!).

Scattergories results - It seems like maybe people were either inside (out of the heat) or enjoying the holiday weekend away from the Library (we know; we can't believe it either). BUT! We did have a few entries, and the Christensen sisters kind of ran away with it this week. Nice job, Emma and Isabel!

Tweezers (as a tool), Trouble (the game played with dice), and various tigers (with stripes) were popular answers. Some of Janis's favorite books were named as "a book about a place", though the Dickens definitely was top (in her book). Tropical blast gum sounds tasty, and if Janis could get her hands on a tiara, she would probably never take it off.

Our new categories are up, and the starting letter is M. My oh my!

The new categories are up, and they could be tough! Our starting letter is "T" and I probably should mention that words like "the, this, that, those," etc., won't count. Descriptors that are specific to the category, please! :)

We had some interesting answers this week. What animal says "dweet dweet dweet"? And I don't think anyone could argue that one can find "dirt" on a farm. One team's "sticky" thing was gross, but accurate! And another team's sweet treat (Dreamsicles) is one of my favorites. Every team came up with a different flower, a different farm thing, and a different thing with spots (dirty dishes, indeed).

After all was tallied, the Bardwells won by one point. All of the teams were within one or two points of the win, so keep up with the creative answers!

I had someone ask about posting the Scattergories responses. While I can’t post all of the weekly responses (there are a LOT! Thanks to all who are playing!), I’m happy to share some of the “highlights”.

Be sure that you get over to the Library lawn to play, and submit your answers!

From week 1:
Everyone came up with different frozen items, vehicles, library items (“super-nerds”?!), and school supplies. Several teams had the Beatles’ yellow “Submarine” as their yellow item, but the Simpsons are most definitely yellow. Stink bugs are apparently prevalent as a kind of insect, as that was a popular answer for that category.
From week 2:
Clothing, candy, fruit, forest, and villains all saw completely different answers for every team. I especially liked the variety of clothing listed, including pantaloons, pinstripe pants, petticoat, and poodle skirt. Our teams went old school! I had to look up “Pretzel Day” as a holiday from the tv show “The Office,” but it worked! Multiple teams named “puce” as their color, and there were some pogo sticks listed as toys.
From week 3:
Our teams really started to get creative with the multiples, and I saw “cotton candy” listed as a type of dessert, a flavor of ice cream, and something at the circus. I had to debate on “chicken” as something found at a zoo, but I guess a petting zoo counts! Carle (Eric) was a popular author, and cleats and clogs were the shoes that several teams chose. And, for the record, I would love to see one team’s “Camel” costume. 😊

The competition is heating up in Scattergories! We had even more entries this week, which meant even more creative answers were needed. And our players didn't disappoint! With "doubles" (that is, words that fit a category that have 2 words that start with the Letter of the Week) and even some triples, we had multiple entries with more than 10 points. But the Bardwells pulled out the win, with 15 points!

Get in on the fun; new categories and a new starting letter are up on the Library lawn. You can submit your answers via Google forms; the link and QR code are on our starting sign outside. Or, you can email us at [email protected], or send a Facebook message with your lists.

We had another very close contest this week in Scattergories. With "doubles" (that is, words that fit a category that have 2 words that start with the Letter of the Week), we had multiple entries at 9 points. But only one winner, with 10 points: the Christensen sisters, Emma and Isabel!

Craft: Friendship bracelets!

Janis has a great version of this craft - easy-peasy, but they look really complicated, so you can impress your friends and family with how amazing you are! Make them dainty or make them sturdy; either way, they look great!

Kudos for the Indianola Library staff! They are posting "walking books" around the parameter fo the library and changing them out frequently. I see families making this loup quite frequently on our morning jobs. Clyde, our dog, enjoys the books a lot as long as I read the copy to him.
Thank you for a great night with the Blank Park Zoo education department.
I am contacting organizations about our Child Abduction Prevention program. C.A.P. for short. I did a small course earlier this month and channel 5 came out for a short segment. I very much would like to get the information out there as I am very passionate about keeping our children safe. I would like to chat with you more about this if you're interested. I am including our video here for you to look at. Thank you for your time. Dave Nelson. 515-249-0031

SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL AGED FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS FOR AUGUST 2018 AND JANUARY 2019 I’m spending the day looking for a family to host a 16-year-old boy from China named Xingyang. Can you help me? Xingyang is described as kind, active, sporty, open, outgoing, and polite. Xingyang enjoys playing basketball, riding horses, volleyball, fishing, cooking, playing card games and watching movies. Can anyone help me in my search for a family who can open their heart and home to Xingyang We’re offering a $50.00 referral gift card or donation for the name of any family that will host him. It is through student exchange that we plant seeds of kindness and understanding while building friendships around the world. Message me if you are interested in applying to host Xingyang or if you know of another good family that might enjoy hosting him. Thank you!
