When this posts I'll have long finished reading the book (I'm writing this on Thursday), based on how quickly I've been getting through it on my lunch breaks! So far I'm around halfway and really enjoying the plot. The Husbands, by Chandler Baker has gotten some mixed reviews but that's not surprising to me since I've had mixed feelings while reading it. Baker most likely intended that, in order to build the mystery of what's going on in Dynasty Ranch while providing a commentary on modern domestic equality.

From what I've read thus far, I've related a lot to the main character, Nora, and I'm invested in the mystery she's slowly picking apart as her wrongful death case pushes her to get to the bottom of the fire in Dynasty Ranch. On the other side, I want to emphasize "slowly." This book does have a lot to say and show about modern partnerships, at the cost of the main mystery and other secrets that have been hinted at. Some reviews have reinforced my suspicion that the mystery itself is what I've already guessed and the major reveals come much later than I'd prefer. Overall, I don't regret picking up this book and have really appreciated the way the author was able to articulate seemingly common household issues (pages 134 and 212-213 will definitely inspire some feelings). The mystery aspect is still present, if not the main focus, and I'm excited to see how things turn out for Nora and her growing family. Let me know what you think if you decide to read this one, I'd love to chat about it! -Jacy #TheHusbands #bookpickoftheweek #goodmorningamericabookclub

Welcome to Friday Reads!
What are reading today?

I've heard wonderful things about this book, so I decided to give it a go and see what the hype is all about!

Here is a little summary

"A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name."

This book is available for checkout!

As far as books involving laundry go, Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems and A Pocket for Corduroy by Don Freeman are in a class all their own. They are also our laundry-inspired book picks of the week!

We thought it might be fun to design pockets for our favorite stuffed rabbit and bear. These pockets can live in books about Corduroy, Knuffle Bunny, and other laundry-bound friends, available for checkout at Indianola Public Library!

This week I'm cheating a little bit by posting one of the book club picks. That's okay though, because I really enjoyed reading this one and the discussion we had after!⠀

To fully enjoy Good Neighbors by Sarah Langan, you'll need to have a little suspension of disbelief. It's set at a point later in the future, but doesn't seem to have as many advances in technology or societal growth as you might think, besides what's convenient for the story. That's the only complaint I have about this book, otherwise I loved the characters and the way the author challenges the suburban ideal. I'll always cheer for kids who are trying to be better than their parents, and that's the case in this book. As a warning, topics like abuse, mental health, and mob violence are present, although they aren't overdone or thrown in for shock value. Every part of the book comes together to tell a larger story, including the newspaper articles and other writings from after the events of the book. Overall, I loved reading this one!⠀

Speaking of book club, we have two to chose from! Each group reads a book a month and meets to discuss it. Check out the two clubs, when they meet, and what we're reading. https://buff.ly/3jprLCb

Kudos for the Indianola Library staff! They are posting "walking books" around the parameter fo the library and changing them out frequently. I see families making this loup quite frequently on our morning jobs. Clyde, our dog, enjoys the books a lot as long as I read the copy to him.
Thank you for a great night with the Blank Park Zoo education department.
I am contacting organizations about our Child Abduction Prevention program. C.A.P. for short. I did a small course earlier this month and channel 5 came out for a short segment. I very much would like to get the information out there as I am very passionate about keeping our children safe. I would like to chat with you more about this if you're interested. I am including our video here for you to look at. Thank you for your time. Dave Nelson. 515-249-0031

SEEKING HOST FAMILIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL AGED FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS FOR AUGUST 2018 AND JANUARY 2019 I’m spending the day looking for a family to host a 16-year-old boy from China named Xingyang. Can you help me? Xingyang is described as kind, active, sporty, open, outgoing, and polite. Xingyang enjoys playing basketball, riding horses, volleyball, fishing, cooking, playing card games and watching movies. Can anyone help me in my search for a family who can open their heart and home to Xingyang We’re offering a $50.00 referral gift card or donation for the name of any family that will host him. It is through student exchange that we plant seeds of kindness and understanding while building friendships around the world. Message me if you are interested in applying to host Xingyang or if you know of another good family that might enjoy hosting him. Thank you!
