A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for much of Eastern Kentucky until 8:00 PM. The primary hazard will be damaging winds.

This Severe Thunderstorm Watch includes the following counties: Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Whitley, and Wolfe.

The majority of the strongest thunderstorms have moved north of Martin County, and conditions have improved across much of the area.

At this time, there are NO active Tornado Watches or Tornado Warnings in effect for Martin County.

Martin County remains under a Flood Watch until 2:00 AM EDT Wednesday. While the most significant severe weather has moved out of the area, additional showers may still produce localized heavy rainfall. Martin County Emergency Management will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if conditions warrant. Stay safe.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Martin County until 10:00 PM tonight.

Thunderstorms are expected this evening into tonight.

Some of these storms could contain damaging winds being the primary threat.

These storms could produce torrential downfalls and could lead to instances of flash flooding.

A flood watch is in place until 2AM Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service in Jackson regarding the weather forecast for today has gotten a little better since yesterday.

We were expecting two rounds of storms for today, one around noon and another this evening around 5PM.

The one expected around noon does not pose a threat but the one this afternoon is still coming together from the North.

The new estimated timeframe is around 3-5 and last into the evening.

With this front we are looking at rain, winds, possible flooding in low lying areas and a slight chance of a tornado.

The biggest factor is the atmosphere during the day. If the skies remain cloudy today the storm cannot generate power, if it’s sunny throughout the day the storm use that power and it will enhance.

This is the prediction at this time and will change throughout the day. We will be watching and updating as the latest predictions become available.

Residents are encouraged to remain weather aware as changing conditions may impact our area tomorrow. Now is the time to prepare before severe weather arrives.

Please take a few moments to:

* Charge cell phones, portable battery packs, and other essential electronics.

* Fuel and test generators if you have one. Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, or other enclosed area.

* Have flashlights and extra batteries readily available.

* Ensure you have an adequate supply of medications, food, water, and other necessities in case of extended power outages.

* Secure outdoor furniture and loose items that could become hazards in strong winds.

* Monitor trusted weather sources and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts, especially overnight.

Martin County Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed. We encourage everyone to stay alert, make preparations early, and avoid unnecessary travel if hazardous weather develops.

I have posted the latest weather slides from the National Weather Service below.

Repetitive showers or stalled showers in the same area could lead to flash flooding at any time tomorrow afternoon until Wednesday morning.

Isolated quarter sized hail as well as the possibility of tornadoes are possible during this same time.

Be weather aware during this weather event. If you live close to an area that is prone to flooding be mindful of your surroundings at all times.

As with any flooding possibility if you think you may be surrounded by water move to safer area before it’s too late.
