Volo Bog is participating in National Trails Day this Saturday! Explore the unique beauty of Volo Bog State Natural Area on a guided bog tour at 11am and 1pm. Stroll along a floating boardwalk through Illinois’ only open-water “quaking” bog, where layers of moss, wildflowers, and even trees rest atop a living, shifting landscape. Formed thousands of years ago by glacial activity, this rare ecosystem showcases every stage of bog development—from marshy edges to the mysterious open-water “eye” at its center. Perfect for nature lovers and curious explorers alike, this tour offers a chance to experience one of the Midwest’s most fascinating and fragile natural wonders up close. Maximum of 10 per group, due to the nature of the floating boardwalk.
