Statement from Brian Weismantle
Chairman, Republican Committee of Allegheny County

Allegheny County Council’s approval of a mandatory twelve-week paid parental leave requirement for employers with fifteen or more employees represents a significant and concerning burden on the business community of this region.

While the desire to support families and enable parents to care for their children is universally shared, the manner in which this policy has been structured is unsustainable. By placing the entire financial responsibility for up to twelve weeks of fully paid leave solely upon employers, without a shared funding mechanism, insurance framework, or adequate consideration of operational realities, this mandate imposes substantial costs that many businesses will struggle to absorb.

Local employers already operate under considerable economic pressure. The addition of this obligation risks reduced hiring, delayed expansion, job losses, and increased costs passed on to consumers. Such outcomes would ultimately harm the very workers and families the policy seeks to assist.

I respectfully urge Allegheny County leadership to reconsider this approach and to examine more balanced alternatives that provide meaningful support for families while remaining viable for the employers who sustain our local economy. Thoughtful policy must account for both compassion and practicality.

As I have for over 35 years in law enforcement, I'll defend our Southwestern Pennsylvania values and our way of life, every day on the legislative frontline.

My priority will always be the people of this Commonwealth, not special interest groups, illegal immigrants, criminals, and others prioritized by the radical left.

Governor Shapiro's choice to shut down skill games rather than push for a legislative compromise severely impacts local VFWs, social clubs, and small businesses by stripping away a critical revenue stream. Instead of standing up for these vital community hubs and charities, the administration left them without a solution - a situation that leadership like Stacy Garrity would have handled differently.

If you missed early voting today, there is another opportunity tomorrow at the North Park Skating Rink.

Did you know you can vote early, in person, this weekend? The Allegheny County Elections Division will have a satellite election office at the North Park Ice Rink (1200 Pearce Mill Rd., Wexford) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18.

Any registered Allegheny County voter can use this location. Your ballot will be printed on-site, and you can fill it out and turn it in right there. Be sure to bring your ID.

Already have a mail-in ballot? You can drop it off here too. Just remember that you can only return your own ballot, and you need to sign and date the outer envelope.

Can’t make it this weekend? North Park will be open again next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25, with the same hours.
