🔥 FIRST TIME TURNING ON YOUR HEATER THIS SEASON? 🔥

As cooler temperatures arrive, many families will be turning on their home heating systems for the first time in months.

Don’t be surprised if you notice a strange smell! 👃

When your heater hasn’t been used for a while, dust can collect on the heating elements. When you turn it on, that dust begins to burn off, creating a temporary burning or dusty smell.

✅ HERE ARE SOME HEATING SAFETY TIPS:

🔥 A slight burning smell can be normal. It should begin fading as the system runs. If it persists or gets stronger, turn the heater off and have it inspected.

🏠 Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure they are working properly and have fresh batteries if needed.

🌬️ Replace your air filters. Dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause your heating system to overheat.

🚫 Keep anything flammable away! Maintain at least 3 feet of clearance around portable heaters and other heating equipment.

🔌 Never use extension cords or power strips with space heaters. Plug them directly into a wall outlet.

⚠️ Know when a smell is NOT normal! A strong electrical burning smell, smoke, sparks, or a persistent burning odor could indicate a serious problem. Turn the system off and seek professional assistance.

🚨 SMELL ROTTEN EGGS? This could indicate a natural gas or propane leak. Leave the home immediately, avoid operating electrical switches, and call 911 or your gas provider from outside.

REMEMBER: A little dust burning off may be normal, but smoke, strong odors, and gas smells should NEVER be ignored!
