Citrus County Schools is aware of a nationwide social media trend involving AI-generated or digitally altered β€œCat in the Hat” images and videos. Although many of these posts may be intended as a joke or prank, some have included threatening language or references to specific schools, communities or individuals.

We have recently seen an increase in this type of content involving some of our schools. The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the local threads that have been posted.

We want to be very clear: Creating, posting or sharing threatening content is not a joke, and participation in an online trend will not be tolerated. All threats whether real, false or intended as a prank are taken seriously and immediately investigated in coordination with law enforcement. Students involved may face serious school disciplinary action as well as criminal consequences. Under Florida law, making a threat or false report involving a school can result in expulsion and referral for criminal prosecution.

We are asking parents and guardians to speak with their children about responsible social media use and the very real consequences of participating in online trends involving threats or intimidation.
If a student sees concerning content, they should report it - not repost it. Sharing or forwarding threatening content can spread fear, interfere with an investigation and cause unnecessary disruption. Concerns should be reported immediately to a trusted adult, school administrator, law enforcement or through FortifyFL.

The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. We appreciate our families’ partnership in helping us put an end to this behavior before it escalates.

We’re excited to partner with Citrus County Libraries to help our students and families discover all the amazing resources available at their local library!

This month, we encourage families to sign up for a library card and open the door to books, learning, discovery and so much more. πŸ’™πŸ“–

Parents of our kindergarten students: your child will be coming home with information about signing up for their very first library card through Citrus County Libraries. New and current families can also visit the Citrus County Libraries website to learn more and sign up for a card.

A library card is a small card that can open the door to a lifetime of reading and learning! 🌟
