Today is National Historic Marker Day! A good time to check out some of the 27 Historic Iola markers in the area.

There are maps and a checklist in the Chamber kiosk on State Street and at the front entranceway to the Iola Historical Society's main museum at 205 Depot Street.

Make it a summer project to go to each one. Most are in Iola's central business district and an easy walk. There are 4 at the Iola Historical Society, so you can quickly check those off!

Learn about how one of Iola's own helped start, and played on, the first Badger football team in the late 1800s; Iola's ski-jumping history, which has three markers; Iola Car Show, with two markers; 1999 Father's Day Fire; Krause Publications/Chet Krause history; Iola's railroad and firefighting history, and lots more!

Some of the markers are also listed on the mural at Chet Krause Legacy Park, tying into local history depicted on the "coins" at the bottom of the mural.

Iola Mills also boasts a Wisconsin State Historical marker with its history.
