Don't miss out on what looks like it is going to be the beginning of a huge annual event supporting Zero Reasons Why Allen County.

Join us in the parking lot south of the Iola swimming pool before 8:45, as we have some stuff to cover and then start the race at 9:00 a.m.

If you didn't get pre-registered online, just show up, sign the waiver, pay the registration fee and join us. Everyone who completes the course of their choice gets a big finisher medal. It doesn't matter if you run it, walk it, jog it, or bring your wheelchair and roll it, we would just love for you to be a part of this event that supports our hometown youth.

If you don't want to do the run, come down and just cheer the participants on with us along the course or at the finish line. It's going to be a great positive day for our community here in Allen County. 🫶

The driver of this 2016 Nissan Versa reported that he believed the fire started in the rear passenger side of the vehicle, possibly in the exhaust system, as he drove on U.S. Highway 169 in northern Allen County. He noticed his vehicle filling with smoke, pulled off the roadway, and exited without injury before it became fully engulfed.

The Allen County Rural Volunteer Fire Department - Kansas extinguished the fire.

Media Release – May 22, 2026

Bear struck north of Iola.

On May 22, 2026, at approximately 4:15 a.m., the Allen County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle accident on West Virginia Road, east of Old U.S. Highway 169, five miles north of Iola. The driver of the vehicle, Justin Mines, reported that he had struck a bear. Mines reported wearing his seat belt and being uninjured.

The bear, severely injured, was found a short distance away and, with the assistance of a Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks (KDWP) Game Warden, was euthanized. Any questions involving the bear should be directed to KDWP.

Over 400 die, and 1000s are injured annually during the Memorial Day weekend. Wearing your seatbelt correctly and not drinking and driving greatly increase your chances of avoiding both.

Today, May 17, is World Baking Day. (We didn't know that was a real thing either.)

While we do love eating baked goods, we thought today would be a great day to share information about an upcoming class for our younger citizens to learn how to make all sorts of good stuff, for themselves, their families, and friends.
