Sometimes mentorship looks like trying something new. Sometimes it looks like having someone to talk to. Sometimes it's simply knowing that someone is going to show up for you.

That's what Big Lu has become for Little Jaxon.

When they were matched, they quickly discovered they shared a love of being creative and learning new things about their cultures. Whether they're building games in Roblox Studio, learning American and Chinese holiday traditions, or simply talking about school and life, they've built a friendship grounded in trust, laughter, and shared experiences.

What happens after you sign up to be a Big? You go through the interview process, finish your required trainings, and we do a background check. After all of that is completed, we find you a Little during enrollment meetings! 💚

Enrollment meetings happen once a week at BBBSJC. The team gathers in the boardroom and identifies every Little and Big that is not matched. They start matching the two based on what is shared during the Little's and Big's interviews such as hobbies, shared interests, and preferences.

Matches are created with the intention of what is best for both the Little and Big. Careful thought and deliberation go into making a match to ensure the match is successful.

September is Big Brothers Big Sisters month! September is all about highlighting the future of mentorship and believing that every youth has potential. Today we are sharing Big Mary and Little Ariana! 💚

Mary has been involved with BBBS for over 20 years now. She was a Big in San Francisco for 24 years before she became a Big in Iowa! Mary wanted to become a Big to help young girls navigate their teen years. She has three daughters and knows how tough being a teenager can be. Mary and Ariana hit it off on day one over their love for Taylor Swift. That year for Halloween, they made Taylor Swift costumes. Mary and Ariana love to stay active and are open to different kinds of experiences.

Ariana was only nine years old when she met Mary and was anxious around others but with Mary as her Big Sister, she has learned to be patient. "It has been fun to watch her develop into her own person. She has a great sense of herself and doesn’t let others get to her," said Big Mary. Mary has become an extended member of Ariana's family. "Mary is amazing! The connection that she has with Ariana is above and beyond what we expected from this. Mary is like an extra family member to us because of the connection they share," said Jessica.

1-in-3 kids in America are growing up without a sustained, adult mentor in their life, and today, there are over 30,000 youth on the waiting list across America ready to be matched with a mentor. Our waiting list in Johnson County is at 75 with most of those being boys. Our list continues to grow.

One of the biggest barriers is the perception of time required. It only takes a couple hours a month. The other reason is the myth of mentorship; a perception that you have to be perfect in order to be a mentor.

You don't need to have a specific degree, job title, or any special qualifications. You just need to be compassionate, patient, and accepting. Just like mentoring itself, a child will never ask you to be perfect. They just want you to be present.

The power of mentorship lies in the moments that spark curiosity, aspiration, and inspire potential. When you give a little time, a word of advice, or a listening ear, you get much more out of it than you put into it. When this happens, we all win.

Before a Big and Little ever meet, there's a lot happening behind the scenes.

It starts with a conversation.Our prospective Bigs participate in an in-depth interview with our staff that typically lasts more than an hour.

We take the time to learn about their interests, experiences, personality, motivation, and what they're hoping to bring to a mentoring relationship.

Why? Because we don't simply pair people together. We take the time to create the right match.

Every Match Maker helps make this process possible by providing the ongoing support needed to recruit, screen, match, and support mentors and children.
