Amended Water Management Regulations now require public water suppliers to restrict nonessential outdoor water uses during droughts declared by the Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

On May 22, 2026 Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca Tepper declared a Level 3 – Critical Drought for the Northeast Region, which includes Essex, Middlesex and Suffolk Counties, as well as the Town of Brookline. The designation follows years of below-average rainfall and declining streamflow across the state, signaling worsening drought conditions and increasing stress on local water supplies.

While the Town of Ipswich reservoir system is currently at full capacity, the regions is experiencing a significant rainfall deficit. Therefore, the Water Department is moving the Drought Status from Moderate to Severe. The associated action level prohibits all outdoor water use. This ban is being imposed in accordance with the Town of Ipswich Drought Management Plan and are effective immediately.

For customers experiencing dirty water, the best way to clear discolored or cloudy water from your tap is to try running the cold water at full pressure for several minutes (up to 15). This removes any discolored water or trapped air that may have entered the pipes in your house, and pulls fresh drinking water from the pipes in the street. As a precaution, avoid running hot water if the cold water is still discolored to prevent discolored water from entering the hot water tank.

🌷💧 It’s Fix a Leak Week and spring has almost sprung!

After a long, freezing winter, your sprinkler system might be waking up with a few… issues. ❄️➡️💦 As everything thaws out, now’s the perfect time to check for leaks before your yard turns into an accidental water park.

A tiny outdoor leak can waste thousands of gallons!!!

👀 Give your system a quick once-over:

Check for broken or cracked sprinkler heads

Look for soggy spots or unexpected puddles

Check the backflow preventer on your irrigation system to make sure it isn't broken or spraying water.
