Citizen Fire Academy Weeks 2 & 3: Learning, Growing, and Building Community.

The 2026 Citizen Fire Academy continues to provide participants with a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to serve and protect our community.

During Week 2, participants spent the evening with our 911 Communications Center, gaining a firsthand understanding of the critical role dispatchers play in every emergency response. From gathering vital information during stressful situations to coordinating resources and relaying information to first responders, our communications professionals are the calm voice behind every call for help. Their dedication and expertise are an essential link in the chain of public safety.

Week 3 shifted into action with Fire Ground Operations. Participants received hands-on training with charged fire hoses, learning the teamwork, strength, and coordination required to move a hose line from Point A to Point B during an emergency. They also had the unforgettable opportunity to climb aboard Truck 1 and experience Irondale from nearly 100 feet in the air, gaining a new perspective on both our city and the work performed by our firefighters. Thanks to Golden Rule BBQ & Grill for the biscuits!

Programs like the Citizen Fire Academy help strengthen the connection between the fire department and the community we proudly serve. By experiencing the challenges, training, and teamwork required of first responders, participants gain a deeper appreciation for the commitment it takes to provide exceptional service every day.

Thank you to all of our participants for your enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Together, we are building stronger relationships, creating informed citizens, and continuing to make Irondale a safer and stronger community.

The kickoff of our 2026 Citizens Fire Academy is officially in the books and what an incredible first night it was!

From the moment the doors opened, the excitement and engagement from our participants was outstanding. We took a deep dive into the rich history of the Irondale Fire Department dating all the way back to 1887, explored how the department has evolved over the years, and shared the vision of where we are headed as we continue building for the future.

Week 1 was filled with great conversation, learning, laughter, and connection as participants got a behind-the-scenes look at the fire service and the people who proudly serve this community every day. This academy is more than just a class it is about building relationships, educating our citizens, and strengthening our community together.

A huge thank you to El Patron - Irondale for providing the fabulous food and helping make the evening even more special.

We are excited for the weeks ahead and cannot wait to continue this journey with such an amazing group of participants.

The crew from the Irondale Fire Department’s Engine 2 had the opportunity to spend time at the Irondale Public Library providing hands-on basic first aid training to our youth participants. From learning the fundamentals of responding during an emergency to building confidence in how to help someone in need, these lessons can make a lasting impact.

Programs like this are a true testament to what building community is all about educating, empowering, and preparing the next generation with life-saving knowledge and skills. Confidence during a medical emergency starts with education, and we are proud to help provide that foundation.

A huge thank you to the Engine 2 crew for taking the time to invest in our community and our youth. Your dedication to teaching and mentoring continues to make a difference far beyond emergency response.

Today, our crews spent time sharpening one of the most important skills in the fire service, pump operations training. If you noticed fire engines set up in parking lots spraying water throughout the day, that was your firefighters hard at work training and preparing for real-world emergencies.

Training like this is critical to ensuring we are ready when the true emergency happens. From establishing water supply to operating pump panels efficiently and safely, these hands-on drills help build muscle memory, teamwork, and confidence under pressure.

In the fire service, training is not something we do occasionally, it is a daily exercise focused on sharpening our skills and staying prepared to serve our community at the highest level possible. Every hose stretched, every gallon pumped, and every scenario practiced today helps us better protect the citizens we proudly serve tomorrow.

Preparedness starts long before the emergency call comes in. 🚒💦

Steps to Safety Lunch & Learn at the Irondale Senior Activity Center was a great opportunity to continue turning our attention toward Fire Prevention Month this May. Participants enjoyed lunch while learning valuable fire and life safety information focused on preventing slips and falls, properly disposing of expired medications, and the importance of staying hydrated as the warmer months steadily approach.

Programs like these provide more than education they create conversation, awareness, and connection throughout our community. Taking time to discuss everyday safety topics can make a tremendous difference in helping our seniors remain safe, healthy, and independent at home.

We are thankful for everyone who attended and participated in the discussion. Opportunities like this continue to show the importance of building community through education, engagement, and proactive fire & life safety outreach.

Today, we pause to honor and celebrate the incredible mothers who make our homes, families, and communities stronger every single day.

From all of us at the Irondale Fire Department, we want to wish every mother a very special and heartfelt Mother’s Day. Your love, strength, compassion, and endless sacrifices never go unnoticed. Whether you are a mother, grandmother, stepmother, guardian, or someone who fills the role of a mother in someone’s life, today we celebrate you.

Thank you for the comfort you provide, the lessons you teach, and the unwavering support you give to those around you. You are truly the heart of our families and the foundation of our community.

To all the mothers your courage, grace, and unconditional love inspire us daily. While many may call firefighters heroes, today we recognize that mothers are the true heroes who shape lives, strengthen families, and make our communities better every single day.

We hope your day is filled with love, laughter, cherished memories, and time spent with the people who mean the most to you.

❤ Happy Mother’s Day from your Irondale Fire Department. ❤️

A huge thank you to A Shift crews for taking time today to participate in the field day tug of war events at Grantswood Community School! The excitement on the kids’ faces when the firefighters showed up was absolutely priceless.

Moments like these create memories that students will carry with them for years to come. From cheering teams on to jumping in and helping make the day fun and exciting, our crews once again showed what it truly means to serve beyond emergency response.

Events like this are a true testament to building community, creating positive engagement, and strengthening the connection between the fire department and the families we proudly serve. Thank you again to everyone who helped make today such a memorable experience for the students and staff!

We had an exciting and engaging fire safety presentation with one of our local civic clubs Kiwanis Club of Birmingham East, and what a great opportunity it was to share life-saving information while continuing to build strong community connections!

During the presentation, we focused on one of the leading causes of home fires, distracted cooking. We emphasized the importance of staying present while cooking, keeping a close eye on the stovetop, and avoiding distractions like phones or stepping away from the kitchen. A simple reminder that “stand by your pan” can truly make all the difference.

We also discussed proper fire extinguisher placement throughout the home. Having an extinguisher easily accessible especially in the kitchen and garage can help you act quickly in the early stages of a fire. Knowing where it is and how to use it is just as important as having one.

Another key topic was ensuring working smoke alarms are installed in the correct locations. Every home should have smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home. We also encouraged monthly testing and regular battery checks to ensure they’re always ready when needed.

Opportunities like this allow us to connect, educate, and empower our community with the knowledge to stay safe. A big thank you to our civic partners for the invitation and for being committed to fire safety!

This is what building community is all about—working together to make Irondale a safer place for everyone.

This morning was one for the books at the fire station! 🚒

We had the incredible opportunity to welcome our local kindergarten classes from Grantswood Community School for a special visit, and their excitement was contagious from the moment they walked off the bus. Sparky the fire dog greeted them as they entered the fire station. From getting a first-hand look at where we live, work, and train, to exploring the ladder truck and learning what it takes to be a firefighter, these young learners were fully engaged every step of the way.

Moments like this are what building community is all about—creating connections, inspiring curiosity, and helping our youngest citizens understand the importance of fire safety in a fun and meaningful way.

To wrap up their visit, each student left with a junior firefighter sticker and a coloring book, hopefully sparking dreams of future firefighters and lifelong safety habits!

A big thank you to the teachers and students for spending part of your day with us, we loved having you at the station! 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒
