Today, as we honor those lost in service to our country at the Irondequoit Memorial Day Parade, we were proud to officially install the Irondequoit Fire District Honor Guard to lead our members.

Over the last six months, this group has dedicated countless hours training both at IFD and nationally in preparation to represent our department with honor, professionalism, and pride.

Led by Honor Guard Commander Ian Palmer, this unit is made up of eight firefighters and officers who stepped forward to help establish and build this program from the ground up.

I could not be more proud of their dedication, commitment, and the professionalism they bring to our department and community.

Yesterday evening at approximately 5:19 PM, Irondequoit Fire District, along with our mutual aid partners from St. Paul Fire Department, Ridge Road Fire District, and Point Pleasant Fire Department, responded to a reported house fire in the district.

First arriving crews confirmed a working fire in a two-story residential home with smoke showing from the structure. Firefighters quickly located and extinguished the fire in the kitchen area while simultaneously conducting searches to ensure all occupants were safely out of the home.

During those searches, firefighters rescued one dog and two cats from the structure. The dog was found unconscious and barely breathing. Firefighters and Irondequoit Ambulance personnel immediately began oxygen therapy and resuscitation efforts using specialized pet rescue equipment. Thanks to the quick actions of responders, the puppy responded well and was alert and acting normally by the end of the incident.

This successful rescue was made possible in part by recent animal rescue training completed by Irondequoit firefighters, led by Dr. Sam Kalis of Irondequoit Animal Hospital, as well as pet oxygen masks and equipment donated through the Fetch Foundation.

The fire was brought under control within approximately 15 minutes. While the fire damage was largely contained to the kitchen area, the home sustained significant smoke and water damage throughout and is currently uninhabitable. Four residents were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Smoke detectors inside the home played an important role in alerting neighbors, who reported seeing and smelling smoke while hearing the alarms sounding.

We would like to thank Irondequoit Police Department, Irondequoit Ambulance, and all assisting mutual aid agencies for their support and teamwork during this incident.

On Tuesday May 5th, members of the Irondequoit Fire District including Fire Chief Shane Metcalfe, Captain Jeffrey Serenati and Lieutenant Michael Nicosia attended the 2026 Seneca Waterways Council Recognition Dinner. The Irondequoit Fire District was awarded the "William H. The Irondequoit Fire District Explorer Program, which guides youths aged 14-18 towards opportunities volunteering in the Fire Service, along with preparing them for careers in the Fire Service. The IFD Explorer Post started in the early 1960's, then chartered through the Ridge Culver Fire District and has continued on with the merge and consolidation of the Laurelton and Ridge Culver Fire Districts in 2022. The post was recognized for over 63 years of continuous service, and is the longest standing in the Seneca Waterways Council. Many thanks to the Seneca Waterways Council for the recognition, and for the post advisors over the last 63 years for creating service, leadership and pride in Fire Exploring and the Fire Service in general!

Last week, Firefighters Oliveri and Lee attended a five day class at the National Honor Guard Academy to sharpen their honor guard skills and bring these practices back to IFD. This program prepares first responders to support families on their most difficult days, while preserving the traditions of the emergency services with honor, dignity, and respect.

Their training strengthens our commitment to professionalism, attention to detail, and serving our community with compassion—whether at ceremonies, community events, or in times of loss.

Nice job gentlemen!

Seeing action on Irondequoit Bay today? The Irondequoit Fire District and the Monroe County Sheriff's Department were out on beautiful Irondequoit Bay today.

Marine 1776 was placed in service last week from winter storage, and was already staffed today during the American Society of Civil Engineers concrete canoe race. This competition provides students a unique opportunity to gain hands on practical experience, while testing their skills with lightweight concrete mix designs and project management challenges.

Thank you for including us in this unique experiment!

As always, have a safe boating season to our boaters!
