Yesterday, the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners was honored to present proclamations to Marty Conley, Tourism Director, recognizing two newly designated sites added to the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

The Johnston House and Post Office in Burlington and Lewis Brooks and Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Proctorville have now joined three other Lawrence County sites on the Network to Freedom, bringing our county’s total to five nationally recognized Underground Railroad sites.

Through the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tourism Initiative, a $1.5 million Appalachian Regional Commission project, a total of 27 historic Underground Railroad sites across the nine-county tristate region are being documented, preserved, and promoted for future generations. These efforts ensure that the stories of courage, sacrifice, and the pursuit of freedom remain a visible part of our shared history.

We invite the public to attend the official dedication ceremonies on Saturday, June 6:

📍 Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Proctorville – 11:00 AM
📍 Burlington Commons – 1:00 PM

Congratulations to Marty Conley and all those involved in preserving and sharing this important chapter of Lawrence County’s history. We encourage everyone to attend and help celebrate these significant additions to the National Network to Freedom.
