Know Your Rights & Responsibilities: Bicycle and E-Bike Laws in Ironton

The City of Ironton reminds residents and visitors to ride responsibly, ride safely, and share the road. Whether you ride a traditional bicycle or an electric bicycle, it is important to understand the rules that help keep riders, drivers, and pedestrians safe.

Bicycle and e-bike operators are expected to follow traffic rules that apply to vehicles and ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable.

Key Bicycle and E-Bike Rules

Riders should be aware of the following requirements:

Follow traffic laws.
Bicycle and electric bicycle riders must obey all applicable traffic rules.

Use hand signals.
When operating a bicycle or electric bicycle on the street, riders must give hand signals before turning, changing lanes, or stopping.

Class 3 e-bike speedometer requirement.
All Class 3 electric bicycles must be equipped with a speedometer that displays the speed of the electric bicycle in miles per hour.

Age rules for Class 3 e-bikes.
No person under 16 years of age may operate a Class 3 electric bicycle. However, a person under 16 may ride as a passenger on a Class 3 electric bicycle if it is designed to accommodate passengers.

Helmet requirement for Class 3 e-bikes.
No person may operate or ride as a passenger on a Class 3 electric bicycle unless they are wearing a protective helmet.

Be Seen. Be Safe.

Visibility is an important part of safe riding. Bicycles and electric bicycles should be equipped with proper lights and reflectors when required.

A front lamp must be mounted on the bicycle or electric bicycle and produce a white light visible from at least 500 feet to the front and 300 feet to the sides.

A red reflector must be visible on the rear from distances of 100 feet to 600 feet when directly in front of lawful lower-beam headlights.

Bicycles and electric bicycles may also be equipped with a device capable of giving an audible signal. However, bicycles and electric bicycles should not be equipped with, and riders should not use, a siren or whistle.
