Today the Ironton Police Department lost the heart and soul of our police family. Our clerk, Cindy Prater, lost her battle with cancer. From her first day at IPD she won the hearts of everyone that worked with her. She was the sweetest and kindest women you could ever hope to meet.

Not a day went by that she wasn't talking about her two grandson's, Wyatt & Bodie. She was super proud of those boys.

She will be profoundly missed by all of us here at the Ironton Police Department and by everyone that knew her.

On Monday, May 29th, 2023, we remember those who gave all for our country. The City of Ironton has held a parade in remembrance of these men and woman since 1868 and this year marks 155 years.

The population of the city quadruples on this day and this year road construction will affect the traffic flow on Park Avenue. If at all possible use the SR 650, SR 141, Coal Grove exit, or the Oakley C. Collins bridge to enter and exit the city.

Stay safe and enjoy this day with your family and friends.

Yesterday, at the Lawrence County, Ohio Museum, I had the privilege to speak with former Ironton Police Department Captain Phillip Gene Butler. Captain Butler was with the department 1959-1984 and was working the day Chief Markel was shot and killed on December 2nd, 1966.
Later that same day Captain Butler arrested the man who killed Chief Markel.
