Hiring Utility Worker 1

The City of Irrigon is seeking a self-directed, highly qualified, and motivated professional to add to our team. We are seeking the right person to fill the position of Utility Worker 1.

The position works under the general direction of the Public Works Director. The Utility Worker 1 performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled operations and maintenance tasks in general construction and maintenance of the city’s parks, systems, and facilities, green spaces for the overall upkeep and goals of the city. The position may require additional training and licensing to perform assigned tasks. Such activities will be per federal and state laws and established city ordinances and regulations. Required to participate in on-call rotation

Minimum Qualifications:
• High school education, 4 years of work experience in a related disciplinary field, internship, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job listed. High school diploma or equivalency required.
• Valid Oregon Driver’s License; CDL Class B highly desired.
• One-year general maintenance, repair, paving, or construction on street maintenance, public works facilities, utility systems, or public improvement is strongly preferred.
• Experience operating backhoe and other construction equipment encouraged.
• Ability to perform manual labor tasks such as digging, shoveling, installing, maintaining signs, removal of obstacles, loading or unloading, etc.
• Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment. Including proper practices, methods, and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of streets and rights-of-way, water distribution, and storm/sanitary sewer systems.
• Considerable ability to interpret the intent of codes and regulations while determining compliance or violation. Formulate and defend decisions while working independently.
• Ability to read maps, and knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the public works field.
• Working knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations, safe operation of equipment and tasks.
• Ability to pass drug testing and maintain a drug-free work environment. Must pass background check.
• Perform work orders as requested and/or directed.
• Ability to deal with challenging situations and individuals; balanced performance under normal or stressful situations; communication in all venues presenting a clear, consistent, and reliable approach within established policies and procedures.
• Assist with preparing reports and activities as directed; maintains complete and accurate records.

This is a nonexempt position. The starting salary for this position is $ 3,724.09/month. The City of Irrigon offers a competitive benefit package and supports Equal Employment Opportunities.

A public meeting of the Budget Committee of the City of Irrigon, State of Oregon, to discuss the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027, will be held at Irrigon City Hall 500 NE Main Avenue in Irrigon Oregon 97844. The position works under the general direction of the Public Works Director. The Grounds and Building Maintenance worker performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled operations and maintenance tasks in general construction and maintenance of the city’s parks, streets, storm drains, water and sewer facilities, green spaces, and buildings for the overall upkeep and goals of the city.

Minimum Qualifications:
• 1 year of work experience in general building maintenance; 1 year experience in park and ground maintenance, with sufficient experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job listed.
• High school diploma or equivalency required.
• Valid Oregon Driver’s License, CDL Class B desired.
• Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment, including proper practices, methods, and safety precautions.
• Experience operating backhoe and other construction equipment desired.
• Ability to perform manual labor tasks such as digging, shoveling, installing, maintaining signs, removal of obstacles, loading or unloading, etc.
• Perform a variety of tasks including carpentry, plumbing, painting, landscaping, and ground maintenance of city facilities and property.
