📢 PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT – OPEN BURNING CLOSURE JUNE 1, 2026

Effective June 1, all open burning will be prohibited until further notice.🛑🔥

Due to increasing temperatures🌡️, forecasted high winds🌬️, and elevated wildfire activity throughout our region🔥, conditions have become increasingly favorable for rapid fire growth and spread. Even small debris burns can quickly escape control and threaten lives, property🏡, crops🌾, and critical infrastructure📡.

We are asking all residents to do their part to reduce wildfire risk by:

✅ Discontinuing all open burning activities🪣
âś… Properly disposing of yard debrisđźš®
✅ Using extreme caution with equipment that may generate sparks🧯
âś… Staying informed of current fire restrictions and weather conditionsđź“°

Wildfire prevention starts with each of us. The actions we take today can help prevent devastating fires tomorrow.

We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Permitted burning is tentatively scheduled to reopen October 1, 2026🗓️. However, that date could be extended based on fire weather conditions.

For questions regarding burn restrictions, please contact us 541-922-3133

We’re pretty lucky to live in a community like this. Last week we had the honor of sending off our tennis team to state, yesterday it was baseball, and tomorrow we get to do it again for our track team!
Join us at 9:45 AM as we send them off with a parade through town. As always, expect sirens, lights, and plenty of community pride as we celebrate these athletes and their hard work.
Come out and help us wish them good luck!

The Irrigon Rural Fire Protection District received a grant from the Wildhorse Foundation for the updating of expired wildland fire shelters.

Irrigon, Oregon – Irrigon Rural Fire Protect District, is all hazards fire district responding to wildfires, structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, with this grant we will be able to provide Irrigon firefighters with new updated fire shelters with a $16,239 grant from the Wildhorse Foundation.

This grant will allow IRFPD to replace expired and/or outdated wildland fire shelters that are a safety requirement for fighting natural cover fires. These fire shelters are lightweight, heat-reflective emergency devices carried by firefighters to protect them when escape from a wildfire is impossible. When deployed, they create a small insulated space that reflects radiant heat and helps shield against flames and hot gases, increasing the chances of survival in extreme conditions.

Each year, the Wildhorse Foundation makes grants to eligible nonprofit, government, and Tribal organizations within the homeland area of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla people. Also eligible for funding are Tribal government agencies or Native American charitable organizations with their base of operations within Oregon, as well as national or regional Indian organizations.

The Wildhorse Foundation has awarded a total of over $20 million in grant funding since its establishment in 2001. Grants are awarded on a quarterly basis with the deadlines being January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. For more information, visit the Foundation’s website at www.thewildhorsefoundation.com.

We’re excited to share some great news with our community! 🔥

Please join us in welcoming Casey Zellars as our new Interim Fire Chief. Casey brings a wealth of fire service experience and is a long-time Eastern Oregon resident. His leadership and dedication to protecting communities like ours make him a great fit, and we are very excited to have him leading our department. 👨‍🚒

We’re also proud to introduce Cecil Jensen as our new full-time firefighter. This is a historic milestone for Irrigon, as it is the first time our department has had a full-time firefighter protecting our community. Cecil is no stranger to our community—he has served here for years as a dedicated volunteer and is excited to step into this new role. 🚒

Cecil will be staffing the station Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Community members are encouraged to stop by, ask questions, share concerns, or just say hello—we’re always glad to connect!

In addition, IRFPD has applied for the OSFM Wildfire Staffing Grant, which helps communities increase staffing during the busy fire season. We are hopeful to be selected for the fourth year, allowing us to staff the station this summer with two additional firefighters as we prepare for the upcoming season.

Please join us in welcoming Casey and congratulating Cecil on this exciting new chapter!

Earlier today, Irrigon Fire was dispatched to a structure fire on the east side of town. Due to the time of day as Irrigon Fire Personnel where either unavailable due to work or out of the area, mutual aid from our neighboring departments, Umatilla rural fire district and Boardman fire district’s responded with adequate staffing and resources for a safe and effective response. A short time after Irrigon Fire crews arrived and assisted operations. We are very grateful for our neighboring agencies and their quick assistance and continued partnership in protecting our communities.

Most importantly, the homeowner was alerted to the fire by working smoke detectors, allowing them to safely exit the home and call 911. This is a strong reminder that smoke detectors save lives. Early warning makes all the difference in an emergency, and we encourage everyone to regularly test their smoke alarms and replace batteries as needed.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the home owners with immediate needs.

We also want to recognize the dedicated volunteers who responded and the employers who support them by allowing them to leave work and serve the community. Their commitment and teamwork are what make emergency response possible in a volunteer-based system.

Irrigon Fire is proud to serve this community as a 100% volunteer fire department. Like many rural departments, we rely on trained volunteers and strong partnerships with neighboring agencies to provide emergency services. We are always looking for additional volunteers to help strengthen our response and continue serving Irrigon safely and effectively.
If you have ever considered giving back to your community, we encourage you to reach out and learn more about volunteer opportunities with Irrigon Fire.

⏰ Daylight Saving Time Reminder ⏰
We know we’re a few days late getting this reminder out… but it’s still an important one!
When the clocks change, it’s a great time to check and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. Working smoke detectors are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your home and family. They provide an early warning that can truly save lives.
đźš’ Irrigon Fire District also offers a Smoke Detector Program. If you need a smoke detector in your home or help installing one, please reach out to us. We want to make sure every home in our community has this important protection.
Please take a few minutes today to check your detectors and help keep your household safe.
