In addition to the severe thunderstorm threat, windy conditions will occur today with widespread wind gusts of 30 to 40+ mph, peaking in the afternoon. Within the advisory area, a few wind gusts may approach 50 mph, which may cause isolated tree damage and resultant power outages.

Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into early evening across Eastern Kentucky. A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) remains in effect, with all severe modes possible (damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and large hail). Please have a reliable means to receive warnings if severe weather threatens your area!

Strong to severe storms are expected to move across the area today. Damaging straight line winds will be the primary severe threat. A couple of tornadoes and isolated instances of large hail are also possible within any supercells.

Strong to severe storms are possible this afternoon and evening with a cold front passage. Damaging winds will be the primary threat with this line of storms, but a brief isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Have a reliable way to receive severe weather warnings should severe storms threaten your area!

Reminder! The statewide tornado drill will occur today, Wednesday, March 4th, 2026 at 10:07 am EST. This is a great opportunity to practice your tornado safety plan at work, school, or home. Feel free to share pictures of your drill with the other NWS offices and Kentucky Emergency Management in the comments!

Once the snow starts falling you should expect road conditions to deteriorate rapidly. Please do not travel during this winter storm unless it is absolutely necessary.

A warming center/shelter is open at West Irvine Elementary School. If you need information about the center call 606-975-4822. If you are visiting the warming center you should go to the back of the school/bus loop and enter through the cafeteria door.

Precipitation in the form of snow is expected to change over to a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain from south to north tonight into Sunday. Significant ice accumulations are possible mainly south of Interstate 64. Any ice accumulations would occur on top of the initial snow accumulations.
