Safe Pet Summer

Since we wear shoes when we go outside, you might not think to check if the pavement is too hot for your pet’s paws. If you are unable to hold your hand on the ground for 5-7 seconds, it’s too hot to walk your pup. Don’t forget that different surfaces retain heat more than others -- believe it or not, artificial turf and other synthetic materials can be hotter than asphalt!

Kittens and puppies aren't the only new babies showing up at the center this time of year — staff recently snapped a photo of this sweet opossum mama. Can you spot the baby on her back? While sightings of wildlife may be common, knowing what to do if they show up in your backyard may not be. Irvine Police Department Animal Services has Animal Resource Guides to help you navigate various situations you may encounter with a variety of wildlife. Happy #Caturday from Reno, who has decided she is perfectly happy to enjoy #RoundCatSummer this year. Even though Reno is comfortable in her own skin, she still likes to work on her fitness. There are many toys out there that get our center cats jumping and romping. Cat teasers and wand toys are inexpensive and an easy way to get your cat moving. Keeping Pets Cool in the Summer

Warm weather poses health risks to your pets – even on days that don’t seem that hot to you. Knowing the risks and being prepared can help keep your pet safe when heading outside for your daily walk. Take walks, hikes, or runs during the cooler hours of the day and avoid hot surfaces, such as asphalt, that can burn your pet’s paws. Have an extra fluffy or light-haired dog? Ask your veterinarian if your pet would benefit from a warm-weather haircut or sunscreen. #SafePetSummer

National Kitten Day

This #Caturday is also National Kitten Day! Each year, the center welcomes hundreds of underage animals not yet ready for adoption. Volunteers in our Foster Care program take these animals into their homes until the animal is at least 8 weeks in age and weighs 2 pounds. With your help, the center is able to provide foster volunteers with all the supplies and equipment needed while these little ones grow. To donate from our wish list, visit irvineanimals.org/support.

Safe Pet Summer

Are you looking forward to a summer filled with outdoor concerts, beach days, and vacations away? Make sure keeping your pet safe is part of your plans. While it’s important to remember to never leave your pet in the car, we also want to remind you to be as mindful about leaving your pet outdoors – even just at home. If your pet is going to be outside, make sure they have plenty of shaded space to relax and fresh, cool water to drink. A small pool can provide a fun-filled place to cool off for you and your pet!

Guinea Pigs

Why limit yourself to the idea of adopting a dog or cat when you could adopt a guinea pig? Guinea pigs are great indoor pets who are very social and often do best in pairs. They make a quiet vibrating sound when they are happy, just like a cat’s purr! Learn more about all of our adoptable pets at irvineanimals.org/adopt.

Not all dogs benefit from social interaction with other dogs. Bella prefers the company of people and would do best as a single dog in her new adoptive home. Success Story: "When Ahsoka, now Soka, first came home, she hid for about 15 minutes and when I left to grab her litter box, she was out and started exploring while I was in the room. All in first day, she climbed on my bed and slept, ate her dinner, and used her liter box. She even made biscuits by my head at 2 in the morning. My mom wasn’t sure about adopting a cat at first but now, she loves Soka. Soka was able to convince another person who hated cats to love her. Soka loves to sit on papers, hide in cabinets, and play tag. She follows me around and attempts to crawl into trash cans when I’m not looking. She absolutely is a sweet cat who brings so much love to anyone who meets her."

Miss Kitty and I enjoyed our 5K sniffari. Thank you Irvine Animal Care Center for our lovely medals. We were pleased to be able to donate in support of your tremendous work and get in some exercise (and sniffing!) too!
We adopted our shy older feline, Athena, last month. She is the perfect sleeping partner for our son! She hides when the house is busy, but she loves to explore in the early morning hours and at night when we are settled and calm. She loves to eat and comes running for her meals. She loves to be petted and will stand on her back legs to reach our hands. When we adopted her, her fur was in bad shape, but she's been on a special diet and now she is very soft and silky. She is learning to accept our love and becomes more apart of our family each day.
Max & Lala, still going strong, going to be 15 and 16 this year

Would love to know how this little guy is doing. I fell in love with him while was at the shelter but someone adopted before me. He was called Rex and I hope he has a great home!
How do I make a donation to go directly to your third chance program?
I can’t thank the Irvine Animal Care Center enough for my beautiful Reid who we adopted in 2014!!! He is a happy and very healthy boy!!! Please donate to this great institution!!! Give, give, give. This organization is wonderful and the people who work there and volunteer there are great and incredible... 😘😘😘
We just added a new member to our family by adopting a small terrier mix by the name of Gucci. According to her profile she was somewhat shy but that did not turn out to be true. She adapted to her new home almost immediately. When we got her home and opened the pet carrier, she ran to the living room picked an old balled up sock and dropped it in front of me so I could throw it. She is just a wonderful addition to our family. I would like to thank the staff of the Irvine Animal Rescue Center for their professionalism and courtesy that they showed me. On behalf of Gucci and all of the stray animals I would would also like to thank the Center's staff for the loving care that they give to them. Attached is a recent photo(s) of Gucci.
Odie, formerly known as Rook, is enjoying life with his big sister, Chloe, going on lots of car rides and walks in the park, lots of toys to play with and good nights sleeping snuggled up to me in bed. His adventures can be seen on their Instagram page @chloeandodie. Thank you to Irvine Animal Care Center for letting me adopt him as well as all the great work you all do from screening people to advising potential adopters on the commitment involved in adopting a pet to following up after they are adopted! Thank you for caring for all these sweet animals! 💜
It's been a month and we love Buddy! ( Formerly Coach)
