Today was our first CERT volunteer effort since this pandemic began. We had 16 volunteers assist with traffic control and distribution of hand sanitizer bottles to over 300 vehicles. All safety precautions were taken - our staff even served the donuts to volunteers so multiple hands stayed out of the box.

Well done, everyone. Thank you for being difference makers in our community.

Because we miss seeing all of our members, we’d love to hear from you here.

Discussion question for the group:
- knowing what you know today, what would you recommend to have in your personal home pandemic readiness kit?

Stay safe and healthy!

Irvine CERT members were on hand last night at the Irvine GROVES senior community to share their expertise on having disaster preparedness supplies readily available at home.

Our CERT volunteers also personally assisted in registering over 20 residents on Alert OC emergency notification system. This personalized service was greatly appreciated by seniors who would not have attempted the online registration by themselves.

Kudos to our members for this well received outreach to the GROVES!

It’s recommended to annually rotate out our water supply to ensure we have fresh drinking water available after a disaster.

This is 36 gallons, which is plenty for our CERT Coordinator Christine’s family of 2 humans and 2 canines for over one week.

FEMA recommends 1 gallon per person per day for 3 days. You can stock 1 gallon per pet per day as well.

How is your water supply looking?

General information

During a large-scale disaster, the response of any community’s emergency services may be delayed or overwhelmed for a variety of reasons. This leaves the citizens of the community - family, neighbors, and co-workers - to provide for their own well-being and safety until professional responders arrive. As a member of the community, you can help the city respond to a disaster by preparing your family, home, school and work. This reality is the cornerstone of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. The goal of the Irvine CERT program is to provide private citizens with the basic skills they will need to protect themselves, their family, and neighbors, and to respond to the immediate needs of the community in the aftermath of a disaster when emergency services are not readily available. Furthermore it is our goal to have an active CERT member on each street or at each business in Irvine. By working together, CERT members can assist in saving lives and protecting property using the basic techniques in this course.

This week, I had the amazing opportunity to observe the Urban Search and Rescue Multi-Task Force Mobilization Exercise “Southern Wind” in which our first responders trained to deal with a “dirty bomb” terrorist attack. As CERT members, you will be familiar with this type of exercise.
Hi all, I'm doing a little digging around on the web looking at ordering items, and many survival/disaster prep sites offer things in bulk at better prices. Has anyone already talked about doing some homework and ordering a bunch of packs, or tools, etc at once? We could ping our neighbors, too, and maybe get better prices, and get kits into more homes around us. I would be happy to put together an effort, if people are interested.
“The timing of the award could not be better,” Irvine City Councilmember Melissa Fox said. “Chief Hamel and I met just this past week to discuss stop sign compliance and overall traffic safety in Irvine. Our residents are very concerned about traffic safety, especially for their children. Chief Hamel immediately followed through on his commitment to me to increase the visibility and frequency of traffic enforcement, and this grant will really help.”
