California Task Force 5 and the Air Force Command

Members of California Task Force 5 (CATF-5) conducted joint training with the Department of Defense Air Force Command. The OCFA is the sponsoring agency for CATF-5, which responds as a FEMA or a California Office of Emergency Services resource during national or regional emergencies. This exercise simulated a Swiftwater Rescue Team response and flew from Camp Pendleton to March Air Force Base.

Happy Star Wars Day from the OCFA! May the Fourth be with you- always. And, remember, don’t play with matches, don’t be the spark, don’t light the fire, and don’t burn the First Order or anything else down.

Our thoughts go out to the friends and family of the victim who perished inside a burning building today.

Firefighters unfortunately found the individual near the back of the building.

An active investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire & circumstances surrounding this incident.

Rescued off the face of a cliff! A mom went after her child who had climbed up the rocks too far only to realize her second child had followed suit behind her. Realizing all three couldn’t get down, they moved to even higher ground with more stable dirt.

Our tech truck firefighter rescuers went over the cliff’s edge with ropes and harnesses to lower all three safely to the beach. Our rescuers appreciated the clapping as they walked off the beach from the concerned crowd who had gathered👏🧑‍🚒😊.

Thank you to @OCSDDanaPoint for their assistance.

Think Fast!!!!

3 businesses, 1 on fire, 1 beginning to catch fire, and the other imminently threatened. That was the scene firefighters encountered at 3:30 in the morning last night.

Rapidly implementing appropriate strategy & tactics resulted in 2 places of employment being saved.

04/25/2021

🚨Let’s play a game!!!

You’re first on scene and find this. What are your concerns? What would you do?

Fortunately, #OCFA Firefighters were advised immediately that there was minimal to no fuel in the enormous tank.

Listen in to our radio traffic for a mayday call for help, rescues, and a roof collapse. These are just a few of the challenges the candidates handled today at our battalion chief academy training drill. Great job to all the crews involved! Thank you to @NBFDPIO for your hospitality.

Did you know the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970?

Happy Earth Day from everyone at OCFA!🧑‍🚒❤️🌎

Put to the test today, candidates in our rigorous battalion chief academy participated in an in-depth wildland fire training exercise. Adding to the reality of the training, helicopters, dozers, and hand crew firefighters were key players. This was a great opportunity to train with our amazing partner agencies right here in our own backyard. @OCParks @AnaheimFireAndRescue @City_of_Irvine @CoronaFireDept #ocfirefighters

Oklahoma City Bombing

26 years ago, 168 lives were lost in the Oklahoma City bombing. Today, and everyday we remember those who died, their loved ones, and the brave first responders who risked their lives to save others.

California Task Force 5, the Orange County-based FEMA response team, sent 62 people to the bombing, including numerous OCFA firefighters. It was the first federal deployment for this task force and is made up of firefighters from various OC fire departments. Two of those representatives still currently work at OCFA, Captain Dean Johnson and OCFA Battalion Chief Mike Morganstern.

Did you know preventing exposures (in this case the apartments) from catching fire is a top priority on every fire?

Last night #OCFA firefighters were able to quickly knock down a carport fire that was threatening apartments.

Fortunately, the fire which occurred in the early morning hours did not result in anyone being displaced from their home.

🔥Earlier today #OCFA firefighters arrived on scene to find significant fire coming from piles of recyclables. Fire was beginning to extend into the structure of the recycling facility.

Firefighters rapidly knocked down the fire saving the building from significant damage.

Did you know the smoke produced by burning recyclables is extremely hazardous?

Based on actual past incidents in Orange County, our Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team firefighters trained with the Santa Margarita Water District in trench rescue techniques. These calls are dangerous and require technical knowledge and skills our firefighters regularly practice in hands-on, real-world training.

Academy 52 Week 5

Last week was week 5 for #OCFAAcademy52 🔥 Recruits continue to work on skill development and hands-on proficiency. 🚒

What an opportunity! A developer granted full access for some intense training on a building scheduled to be demolished on Marguerite Parkway in @MissionViejoCA. About 25 engines and trucks practiced breaching walls, self-rescue, roof operations, and Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) techniques.

Technical rescue Truck 9, located in Mission Viejo, organized the training . T9, T32, T61, and Heavy Rescue 6 are proud members of FEMA’s California Task Force 5.

Great job by three residents in @CityofIrvine who awoke to the sound of loud popping and crackling when their garage was on fire. They did the right thing by keeping the interior door to their garage closed after feeling it was warm using the back of their hand. They escaped without injury and called 911. Engine 36 arrived & initiated a quick attack- with garage roof collapse imminent. Closed doors limit fire extension. For more home safety tips, visit OCFA.org. Thank you to our partners @IrvinePolice for their teamwork.

This week recruits from Academy 52 learned how to self rescue from a burning building, trained on hose-lays, perfected their ladder throws, and practiced forcible entry techniques.

We capped this off with some good old fashioned competition. Recruits raced each other through a series of forcible entry props. This inspires camaraderie and reminds the recruits to rely on their training in stressful situations.

Keep up the strong work 52!

Yesterday #OCFA firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a large truck fire. 🛻 🔥

The fire occurred on the 73 freeway. There was brush nearby, and with the winds blowing it was imperative to get a quick stop.

We are also happy to report there were no injuries. Thanks to CHP for clearing traffic, providing us a safe area to work.

Teamwork between the #OCFA & Orange County Sheriff's Department, CA resulted in a dangerous situation being mitigated without injuries.

With a potential barricaded subject inside a home on fire, firefighters had to utilize a defensive strategy.

Adjacent homes were saved from fire damage as a result of the unified approach on this incident.
