⏰ Did IHSS cut your hours at your annual reassessment?

Every year, the county reviews your IHSS case — and sometimes the authorized hours come back lower, even when your needs haven't changed.

If that happened to you:
• You don't have to accept the reduction
• You have 90 days from the Notice of Action to request a state hearing
• Filing within 10 days before the change takes effect can keep your current hours in place while you wait

At reassessment, the county measures what you can and can't do for yourself — bathing, dressing, cooking, cleaning, and more. If the social worker didn't see the full picture, the hours won't reflect it.

Keep a daily log of the help you actually need. It matters at the hearing.

🛡️ Think IHSS Protective Supervision covers full-time supervision? It can — it's the one IHSS service that can be authorized up to 24 hours a day. But the county won't take your word for it.

To get Protective Supervision approved, you need to show:
• A 24-hour plan of care — who is watching the person, and when
• A log of incidents — wandering, self-injury, unsafe behaviors, with dates
• A doctor's statement connecting the disability to the need for supervision
• Evidence the person cannot be left alone safely, even briefly

A diagnosis alone is not enough. The county looks at what happens when no one is watching.

If your application was denied, you have 90 days to request a state hearing.

The Autism Society Inland Empire is accepting artwork for its 2027 Annual Art Calendar — selected artists are featured in the calendar and considered for future art shows, exhibits, and awareness campaigns.

Who can apply: artists with autism who live in Riverside or San Bernardino County (original artwork only — no copyrighted characters, please).

Got an IHSS Notice of Action you disagree with? You do not have to accept it.

You have 90 days from the date of the county's notice to request a state hearing. And if you are already receiving IHSS, filing within 10 days before the notice takes effect can keep your current hours in place while you wait for a decision.

At the hearing, you will present evidence about your needs: testimony, medical reports, daily logs. Preparation makes the difference.

An autism diagnosis by itself does not automatically qualify a child for Protective Supervision. The county looks at how the child’s disability affects their judgment, awareness of danger, and ability to remain safe.

A child with autism may qualify for IHSS if their condition causes them to be unable to recognize danger and they need ongoing supervision.
