Happy International Dog Day!

Like many of you, I’m a fan of Dolly Parton.

But five years ago, it was her incredible humility that really stood out to me.

When Tennessee lawmakers proposed placing a statue of her at the State Capitol, Dolly asked them not to, saying, “Given all that is going on in the world, I don’t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time.” She added that perhaps years down the road, or even after she was gone, if people still felt she deserved it, she would stand proudly in the State Capitol as a grateful Tennessean.

Now that her 5 o’clock has come, perhaps it’s time for that pedestal.

Dolly Parton’s legacy extends far beyond the music and performances that brought joy to generations. Her contributions to children’s literacy and advocacy, philanthropy, the arts, and our country reflected the generosity, humility, and humanity that made her so beloved.

Today seems like a fitting time to honor her remarkable life, legacy, and countless contributions to America.

Parton thanked Tennessee lawmakers, but asked them not to consider a bill that would allow for a statue of her on the grounds of the Capitol.

I love Costco, but this isn't about hot dogs.

Or, at least, not the kind you're thinking of. 🐶

It's HOT out there, and as temperatures climb, please keep our four-legged friends in mind.

Pavement and asphalt can get significantly hotter than the air around us, and unlike you and me, our dogs aren't wearing shoes. Before heading out for a walk, check the pavement and consider saving longer walks for the cooler parts of the day.

And please, never leave a pet or child unattended in a parked car, even with the windows cracked. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise nearly 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.

Years ago, I helped craft California legislation (AB 797) protecting Good Samaritans who take appropriate steps to rescue animals trapped in dangerously hot vehicles.

So while you're staying cool this week, don't forget about your pets. Keep the water bowls full, watch those paws, and save the hot dogs for Costco.

I always enjoy visiting the Woollett Aquatics Center at Heritage Park.

Thanks to Irvine's longstanding investment in our parks, recreation facilities, and public infrastructure, our community continues to attract major events like this weekend's Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, bringing some of the world's best swimmers right here to Irvine.

Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed, particularly those who set new meet and WORLD records!

And what an incredible opportunity for so many of our own young swimmers to see that kind of athletic precision firsthand, right here in their hometown. 🏊

I'm excited Irvine will be hosting the 2026 Chimac Festival this weekend.

It will be a treat to try tasty food, enjoy live music, and much more at the Great Park. Thankfully, I've got time for a few extra walks and workouts before I gorge myself on fried chicken!

Dean and I attended church in Woodbridge together where we often spoke of his service to our community. I will miss his friendship, counsel, and occasional razzing.

The Irvine Unified School District would like to take a moment to honor the life and legacy of Roland Dean Olson, an IUSD founding Board Member, who passed away on July 29 at the age of 97.

As one of the leaders who helped establish IUSD in 1972, Dean, his fellow Board members and IUSD’s first Superintendent, Stan Corey, believed every decision should be grounded in what is best for children. Their leadership helped lay the foundation for IUSD’s commitment to educational excellence, innovation and strong community partnerships, a tradition that continues today through the leadership of the IUSD Board of Education and Superintendent.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dean’s family and loved ones. His legacy, joy for IUSD and commitment to student success will continue to inspire us for years to come.

Can you name this tune?

I’m not sure who made it viral first this summer: West Virginia baseball or the World Cup. ⚾️⚽️

A number of my late grandfather’s friends from the Irvine Chinese Evergreen Senior Association formed the Irvine Funtime Harmonica Band some years ago, and I was delighted to be invited to their summer concert this afternoon.

Whether it was West Virginia baseball or the World Cup, once they started playing this one, much of the audience couldn’t help but sing along!
