‼️ HEADS UP ‼️

Please see the message below regarding the road closure that will occur at South Passage SE beginning on June 1.

BNSF/The Railroad has scheduled a full maintenance project at the South Passage SE crossing. Starting June 1st, the crossing will be completely closed for approximately two weeks while railroad crews replace the track planking.

Because this project is entirely operated and scheduled by the railroad, the city does not control the timeline, but we want to make sure our community is prepared! Please plan for alternate routes, expect detours, and allow extra travel time. Thank you for your patience as the railroad completes these required upgrades!

This week, Officers Glavan and Morgan got to spend some time community policing with our littlest friends at Lil Sprouts Child Care Center. They were able to talk to the kids about being a police officer, hand out some coveted IPD stickers and let the kids climb in their squad cars.

In return, the kids colored us these awesome pictures and made us a giant thank you card with their handprints on it. Special thanks to them for inviting us out!

We would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Sherry Longley Photography & Design for donating her time to take professional headshots for the three newest members of Isanti PD. Sherry graciously donated her time a few years ago to take photos of the rest of us.

👮‍♀️ - Officer Petra Saldana has been with the PD since August. She was sworn in during a city council meeting in January after having completed field training. Officer Saldana is fluent in Spanish, which is an incredible asset to our community.

🚓 - Community Service Officer Jon Wilds has been with the PD since November. He is a transplant to Minnesota from Michigan and was looking for a role where he could be more active in the community. CSO Wilds will handle all code enforcement.

✏️ - Records Technician Liz Shambaugh joined the PD in April. She has a degree in Law Enforcement and enjoys being in the outdoors.

Please join us in welcoming them to the team!

During last month's ICLEA Banquet, awards were given out in categories such as Meritorious Service, Life Saving, and Employee of the Year.

Here at IPD, we have three award winners!

⭐️ Lifesaving Award ⭐️
The Lifesaving Awards recognizes individuals who, while performing in an official capacity with their law enforcement agency, perform a deliberate and successful act that saves another person's life. The recipient must have been aware of the seriousness of the situation, and the lifesaving action must have been intentional and not caused by the recipient’s own carelessness. In addition, there must have been a strong likelihood that the person would have died if the action had
not been taken.

Officer Heiller was awarded a Lifesaving Award for responding to a medical of an unresponsive subject. Officer Heiller located the subject, moved them to a different location to allow for additional room to perform lifesaving measures. Officer Heiller administered Narcan and performed sternum rubs on the subject, who later regained consciousness due to Officer Heiller's actions. (Officer Heiller is not pictured)

⭐️Volunteer of the Year Award⭐️
The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to volunteers or individuals who have made their community a better place through service or assistance to law enforcement.

Reserve Officer Nate Prins has put in over 200 hours as a police reserve in the City of Isanti. In addition, Reserve Officer Prins works full-time, is currently in school for law enforcement and is raising a family. Reserve Officers work alongside our officers. They patrol the city, ensure that buildings and parks are secure and backup patrol officers when needed. (Pictured with ICLEA President, Jonathan Westberg)

⭐️Distinguished Service Award⭐️
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual who has distinguished themselves through highly creditable or exceptional actions. The recipient has made a significant contribution to the development of programs, policies or procedures that have a substantial and positive impact on their department, the community or profession. This award also recognizes those who take extraordinary action while assisting members of the community, reflecting the highest standards of service and commitment.

Officer Schaefer continually displays professionalism and dedication to his work as a police officer. During a domestic assault call involving a volatile situation with multiple people in the home, Officer Schaefer conducted a thorough investigation while ensuring the safety of everyone involved. He spoke with the victim and reassured her that the abuse she experienced was not normal and she deserved better. The victim later shared how Officer Schaefer made her feel believed, valued and safe to speak freely which is not always easy for victims facing such difficult circumstances.

Officer Schaefer consistently demonstrates professionalism and compassion, both in the field and in court. After the suspect in this case was found guilty, Officer Schaefer's first question was about the victim's well-being.

He was awarded this award for his victim-centered approach and unwavering commitment to the community. (Pictured with ICLEA President Jonathan Westberg)

We are so proud of our ICLEA Award Winners and thankful that they get to serve this amazing community with such kindness and compassion.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧: Suspicion
🆆🅷🅴🅽: December 7, 2025, at approximately 5:43 PM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On December 7, 2025, at approximately 5:43 PM, Officer Schaefer was dispatched to a welfare check. The reporting party (RP) indicated that an intoxicated male arrived in a vehicle, was denied service due to intoxication and left on foot.

Upon arrival, Officer Schaefer located the subject’s vehicle in the parking lot where it was parked haphazardly. Officer Schaefer spoke to the RP who gave a physical description of the male subject. The RP also showed Officer Schaefer the video of the vehicle pulling into the lot and parking at 5:30 PM. The male subject takes exaggerated steps and walks in a wide arch into the establishment.

Officer Schaefer went to the residence of the registered owner of the vehicle, who matched the description given by the RP and the video shown. The subject initially said that he was denied service but believed that they were wrong as he was not intoxicated. When the subject was informed that there were cameras, the subject indicated that he had driven there after hunting but was picked up by his roommate. The male roommate indicated that the subject always appears intoxicated, even when he’s sober.

Officer Schaefer asked the subject if he would be willing to do Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs). At first, he seemed hesitant and declined. At which time, he was told he was being placed under arrest. Once informed he was under arrest, the male agreed to do SFSTs. While speaking with the subject, Officer Schaefer noted that he was swaying to maintain balance, had red, watery eyes and he could smell the odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. The subject was read his Miranda Rights.

When asked how much he had to drink today, the subject indicated that he had one PBR beer approximately 5-6 hours ago before he went hunting and just had one sip of a bloody Mary just prior to Officer Schaefer’s arrival. The subject, once again, stated he was hunting all day. At this time, Deputy Miller arrived on scene to assist.

The subject agreed to do SFSTs, and, let’s face it, I wouldn’t be writing this if he passed. By this time, approximately 15 minutes had passed since the subject indicated that he had taken a sip of alcohol. This would dissipate any mouth alcohol. The PBT sample provided was .322.

The subject was informed that he was under arrest, and he was placed in the rear passenger compartment of Officer Schaefer’s patrol car.

At the jail, the subject completed the Data Master Breath Test where his result was a .29. The subject was cleared at Cambridge Medical Center for jail and was turned over to jail staff without incident.

He was charged with:
✅ - Third Degree DWI – Under the Influence of Alcohol – Gross Misdemeanor
✅ - Third Degree DWI over .08 within 2 hours – Gross Misdemeanor

Special thanks to Deputy Miller for the assistance on this case.

Remember to be kind, play nice and keep your hands to yourselves.
