Beach Renourishment Project Update 🚧🏝️

Crews completed Reach 1 of the beach renourishment project yesterday afternoon, Aug. 30, and are now mobilizing pipelines and equipment to Reach 2. Sand pumping is expected to begin later today near the Wild Dunes Property Owners Beach House.

Marinex placed approximately 900,000 cubic yards of sand along Reach 1, which extended from Mariner’s Walk to Dewees Inlet. For perspective, that is enough sand to fill roughly 275 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

On Friday, members of the City’s Beach Preservation Committee joined Marinex at the construction site near Ocean Club to inspect the completed work and review the project’s progress. Construction remains ahead of schedule.

During Reach 2, crews will place approximately 800,000 cubic yards of sand between the Wild Dunes Property Owners Beach House and 56th Avenue. Work in this area is expected to take approximately 45 days.

Once Reach 2 is complete, crews will move to Reach 3 on the south end of the island, extending from the Isle of Palms Pier to Breach Inlet.

🏖️ Beach Renourishment Update

Marinex has pumped approximately 350,000 cubic yards of sand and completed about 40% of Reach 1. Renourishment is currently taking place near Summer Dunes Lane and progressing north toward Tidewater Villas.

Sand pumping is temporarily paused while repairs are made to the dredge. With favorable weather expected through the remainder of the week, crews anticipate resuming operations soon.

The active construction zone currently extends from Summer House Villas to Seascape. Beachgoers can walk around the fenced area to access the beach.

Additional work underway includes:

- Sandbags are being removed in front of Tidewater Villas in preparation for renourishment. Marinex is coordinating the process carefully to help keep properties protected during the transition.

- A new dune is taking shape in front of Summer Dunes Lane. The project team is considering adding a gradual slope along the back of the dune to make pedestrian beach access easier.

🗺️ The project is divided into three areas:
- Reach 1: Mariner’s Walk north beyond Ocean Club
- Reach 2: Wild Dunes Property Owners Beach House south to approximately 55th Avenue
- Reach 3: The pier to Breach Inlet

Crews anticipate completing Reach 1 and beginning work on Reach 2 near the Wild Dunes Property Owners Beach House by the middle of next month.

🐢 Protecting Sea Turtles During Beach Renourishment

Every day from May 1 through mid-August, members of the Island Turtle Team patrol the entire Isle of Palms beach at dawn. They look for new sea turtle tracks, check nests for overnight hatching, and monitor for threats such as ghost crabs, sand buildup, and erosion.

During beach renourishment, protecting nesting sea turtles remains a top priority. If a turtle enters the construction area, all machinery and lights are shut down until she leaves. If she lays eggs, the Turtle Team carefully relocates them to a safe incubation site. Marinex also has a paid turtle monitor surveying the construction area throughout the night. Although nesting during construction is rare, crews are prepared to respond.

Most Isle of Palms nests this year were laid in Wild Dunes before renourishment work began. Under the guidance of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, nests within the three project areas were relocated to the middle of the island. A few nests at the south end were allowed to remain in place and have already hatched. Work in that area will not begin for several more months.

🔎 If you see turtle activity:
- Report new tracks or nests to the IOP Police Department’s nonemergency line at (843) 886-6522.

- Large X’s across tracks indicate that the Turtle Team has inspected the area and either marked or relocated the nest.

- Report any stranded sea turtle (dead or alive) to the same number.

- An orange-painted dead turtle has already been documented and is awaiting removal by IOP Public Works.

The Turtle Team reports a successful season, with 40 nests recorded on the Isle of Palms so far, about half of which had hatched by the second week of August. Across South Carolina, some beaches are experiencing record-breaking nesting numbers.
