On May 27, 2026 at 8:09 a.m. officers with the Issaquah Police Department and personnel from Eastside Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the trailhead parking lot near East Sunset Way and 6th Avenue NE following a report of an unresponsive female inside a vehicle who was not breathing.

Upon arrival, Issaquah officers found Eastside Fire & Rescue already on scene performing lifesaving measures. Despite those efforts, the victim did not respond to medical intervention and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives responded and conducted an initial investigation. At this time, the incident appears to be the result of a medical event.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the identity of the 41-year-old female from Wenatchee, as well as the official cause and manner of death, following completion of their investigation.

This remains an active investigation as detectives continue to gather information.

For those who may not yet have heard, it is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of our beloved comfort dog, Riggs, earlier this March.

His passing was sudden and due to an unexpected medical event. While our hearts are still hurting, we want our community to know that Riggs was deeply loved and cared for every single day of his life.

As the Issaquah Police Department’s very first comfort dog, Riggs created a legacy that will never be forgotten. Whether he was greeting visitors, supporting someone through a difficult moment, or simply bringing smiles into the building each day, Riggs had a way of making people feel safe, welcome, and loved. The department has felt incredibly empty these past two months without hearing his footsteps in the halls or seeing his familiar face around the office.

While no dog could ever replace Riggs, we know he would have loved helping welcome the newest member of our comfort dog program: Duke.

Duke is a dark golden retriever puppy who is quickly approaching 3 months old, and he is already proving to be brilliant, sweet, curious, and very handsome. In a way that feels very fitting for Riggs, he also left behind plenty of well-loved toys for Duke to enjoy because, unlike many puppies, Riggs never really chewed them up.

Duke is already helping bring some light and healing back into the department, and we look forward to watching him grow into his important role serving our community.

We also look forward to introducing Duke to all of you soon, so keep an eye out for future community meet-and-greets and appearances.

Thank you to everyone who loved Riggs alongside us. ❤️

Issaquah Police Department has successfully completed a rigorous accreditation program that certifies it is operating under best practices and standards for law enforcement. The program is administered by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) and involves a seven-phase process over several months.

“We are proud to be accredited by WASPC,” said Chief Paula Schwan. “It means our department has achieved the highest professional standards for policing.”

Benefits of accreditation include administrative and operational effectiveness, fair recruitment and employment practices, better records management, improved use of technology, health and safety, training, codes of conduct and prisoner security, among other important law enforcement tasks.

“Police accountability is important to ensure and improve public trust, said Steven Strachan, WASPC executive director Issaquah Police Department took these direct and tangible steps to earn the public’s confidence in their operations. The community should be proud of the men and women who serve them every day.”

The certification is awarded for a four-year period when the re-accreditation process begins. Issaquah Police Department will re-accredit in 2030.

The Washington Legislature originally called for the development of standards and goals for law enforcement in 1976. WASPC was founded in 1963 and represents executive and top management personnel from law enforcement agencies statewide. With more than 900 members it includes sheriffs, police chiefs, as well as the Washington State Patrol, the Washington Department of Corrections, and representatives of several federal agencies and Tribal governments.

Recently, we have seen a regional increase in thefts from gym locker rooms, cars parked at gyms, and even vehicles stolen after keys were taken from lockers.

As a reminder, do not bring anything of value to the gym that you cannot keep on your person while working out. This includes car keys, wallets, credit cards, IDs, and phones.

Do not leave valuables in your vehicle, either. Thieves have been known to watch people park, hide valuables, and then enter the gym.

The best practice is to bring only what you absolutely need and leave everything else safely at home.
