Today we're honoring another organization that is making a difference in the lives of foster children in Washington state. This is a fitting story for the 4th of July weekend.
Embrace was recently blessed with the opportunity to help two youth in care say goodbye to their beloved grandpa. It all started with a call from a social worker – the boys’ grandpa had suddenly passed away and there were no family members to help with burial expenses or to plan a service. Embrace immediately stepped in to help. The grandpa was a veteran of the Vietnam War, so we called Veterans Help Net a new organization in Spokane that help veterans with needs they may have. With Vet Net and some help from our friends at Rotary 21, we were able to provide a military ceremony for the family. With only a couple of days to make this happen Embrace pulled together funding to help with expenses and Vet Net connected with Washington State Veterans Cemetery and medical director Rudy Lopez - not an easy task with Covid-19 limits and restrictions.
Wes Anderson Chaplin of VGW Post51 led the service and Col. Brian Newbury from Rotary 21 of Spokane performed the military honors. Col. Newbury, a former Fairchild AFB Commander, presented each of the boys with a memorial flag in a proper display case. The ceremony also included a moving Bagpipe rendering of “Amazing Grace” by piper Fred Freeman.
When Col. Newbury presented the Flags to the boys he stated:
“The markers on a grave contain two dates and a dash. The dates, we know, represent the birth and death of your Grandpa. The dash represents the life he lived. I don’t know much about your Grandpa’s dash, but I do know two things. He loved his country and he loved you two.”
After the ceremony we all went to lunch. It is such an honor to partner with our community to help two boys in foster care who loved their grandpa, and to honor a veteran of the Vietnam War. On this 4th of July weekend, we want to say thank you to our supporters, partners, and our foster families who show love every day by supporting us and the sweet foster children we serve.
God Bless,
Alene
