It's a great time to remind everyone of N.Y. Veh. & Traf. Law § 1144(a)

"Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle equipped with at least one lighted lamp exhibiting red light visible under normal atmospheric conditions from a distance of five hundred feet to the front of such vehicle other than a police vehicle or bicycle when operated as an authorized emergency vehicle, and when audible signals are sounded from any said vehicle by siren, exhaust whistle, bell, air-horn or electronic equivalent; the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right of way and shall immediately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as possible to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway, or to either edge of a one-way roadway three or more lanes in width, clear of any intersection, and shall stop and remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, unless otherwise directed by a police officer."

Emergency services rely on you to follow this law, pulling over and stopping to the right, so we can follow the second part, "the duty to drive with reasonable care for all persons using the highway"

NEW YORK...

The combination of dry fine fuels, southerly wind gusts of to 20
to 30 mph, and relative humidity values as low as 20 to 35
percent will contribute to an elevated risk for fire spread
on Thursday for portions of Central New York.

The annual statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14. No burn
permits are issued.

Help Prevent Wildfires- Open burning is the single greatest cause of wildfires in NYS. Anyone who violates the state’s open burning regulations will be subject to both criminal and civil enforcement actions.

With Daylight Saving Time beginning tonight, remember to change your clocks and check the smoke & carbon monoxide alarms that keep your family safe.

Check the date: Smoke & carbon monoxide detectors don’t last forever. Replace smoke detectors 10 years after the date on the back. Replace CO detectors according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually after 5-7 years.

Change the battery in all smoke & CO detectors that have replaceable batteries. Smoke detectors sold in NY since 2019 have sealed 10-year batteries.

Clean & test the alarm: Remove dust & cobwebs with a vacuum or compressed air to help prevent false alarms. Then press & hold the TEST button until the alarm sounds.
