Today, May 16th, is Native Nonprofit Day!

“Native nonprofits have the knowledge and the solutions to address the issues facing our nations and communities, but we need the resources to make them a reality. The disparities aren’t just figures on a page—they are broken promises that impact the lived realities of our people. With federal cuts and mounting challenges, the gap between what we need and what we receive is growing wider. The stakes are higher than ever. Native Nonprofit Day is a chance to elevate our voices, together demanding that foundations and donors, “Give Native. Give Now.” Our communities deserve nothing less.”
- Carly Bad Heart Bull, JD (Flandreau Santee)
Executive Director, Native Ways Federation

Join us today in addressing these challenges by donating and sharing about Native Nonprofit day!

13/05/2025

We know that Indigenous led organizations have the solutions to issues that impact all communities, but are disproportionately underfunded.

Did you know that:
Native Americans and Alaska Natives are 2.9% of the U.S. population but Native-serving causes receive 0.4% of philanthropic dollars.
67% of philanthropic foundation leaders say they provide little or no funding to organizations serving Native communities.

What can we do?
Support us and other Indigenous led nonprofits on Native Nonprofit Day! This Friday, May 16th is the 3rd annual Native Nonprofit Day, which was started to address this gap in funding.

Early giving has already opened for this year’s fundraising!
Donate at NativeNonprofit.Day and Educate others about Native Nonprofit Day and the disparity in philanthropic giving.

May 5th is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives (MMIWR) Day. Across Turtle Island, Indigenous People- especially Women, Girls, and Two-Sprit Individuals- experience disproportionately high rates of violence.

Dr. Mariana Vergara, EdD (Mapuche/Aymara), is an educator and activist who developed Mindfulness into Action (MIA), a transformational learning methodology based on Indigenous ancient knowledge.
MIA helps participants identify, observe, and change self-sabotaging behaviors. “Research in neuroscience supports the idea that 95-98% of what we do is the result of unconscious habits that override conscious thought and truly drive our behavior.” – Mariana Vergara.
MIA focuses on epigenetics, empowering individuals to address complex societal issues by fostering greater self-awareness and consciousness through cycles of reflection. Vergara has used MIA to help communities heal and develop the activist skills needed to confront oppression, change policies, and build solidarity. Much of her work has taken place in Ecuador, where Indigenous participants in MIA reclaimed their land from invading mining companies and upheld Indigenous rights to their land. This Kichwa community in the Amazon rainforest grows traditional crops and cultivates medicinal trees and plants. Vergara brought students from Europe and the USA to live with Indigenous families, learning traditional medicines while paying “tuition” to their Kichwa hosts.
Currently, Vergara is conducting post-doctoral research supporting Indigenous immigrants from South and Central America to ensure their children have access to quality education in Rockland County, NY. MIA participants incorporate Indigenous practices into their daily lives, fostering sustainable, transformational professional and personal change.

Listen to her presentation: Using “Mindfulness Into Action (MIA)” to Successfully Resolve Intense Conflicts Between Indigenous Communities and Mining Companies within the Amazon River Basin. Employing MIA to Strengthen Our Commitment to Protect Pachamama and All Our Relations live on May 3rd or recieve recordings after the event!
