Memorial Day Tribute: Honoring Local Heroes from Tompkins, Chemung, and Cortland Counties
Memorial Day Tribute to Our Local Heroes
On this Memorial Day, we honor and remember our local heroes from Tompkins, Chemung, and Cortland Counties, each with a story of service and sacrifice. We remember Tuskegee Airman Verdelle Louis Payne of Tompkins County, who broke barriers flying in WWII, and the Sorrells brothers of Chemung County, siblings who stood united in service. We salute 2nd Lt. Terrence Graves of Tompkins County, a Marine who earned the Medal of Honor in Vietnam by giving his life to save his comrades. We honor Zak Stamp of Tompkins County, who answered the call to serve in our modern era with courage and dedication.
We pay tribute to U.S. Air Force veteran Paul Lee Jones Sr. of Chemung County, whose dedication to duty and community will never be forgotten. We honor Edward Brewer of Chemung County, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. We celebrate the legacy of Rev. Abraham Lincoln DeMond of Cortland County, the first Black graduate of SUNY Cortland and a post-Civil War pioneer for equality. We remember Pfc. Shawn Falter of Cortland County, who laid down his life in Iraq. Finally, we bow our heads for the unnamed Civil War veterans from our communities whose sacrifices built the foundation of our freedom.
Each of these individuals — whether known by many or remembered by few — embodies courage, duty, and love of country. We owe them an immeasurable debt, and their legacy lives on in our hearts. Today and always, we carry their memories with gratitude and honor.
