Cornell Chimes

Cornell Chimes The Cornell Chimes are the university's oldest musical tradition, and one of the most frequently played set of bells on any American college campus.

Housed in historic McGraw Tower, the 21-bells are played primarily by student chimesmasters.

๐Ÿ”” Tomorrow, Thursday, March 14th, we are ringing in Giving Day 2024! ๐Ÿ””

Since 1868, the Cornell Chimes program has been an integral part of the Cornell community and experience, all thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends.

If you are able, please visit our Giving Day website and make a contribution! https://givingday.cornell.edu/campaigns/chimes-general-fund

Your donations will directly support our Chimesmasters through program costs, facilities management of the tower and its instruments, and ongoing opportunities for Chimesmasters to develop their skills.

Thank you for celebrating Giving Day and the chimes journey with us, we truly appreciate all your support! โค๏ธ

WEโ€™RE OPEN FOR VISITORS!!! ๐ŸŽ‰

We are very happy to announce that we are now able to have visitors at our concerts again, as construction is paused for winter weather from now until around April!

โš ๏ธ Important things to note:

๐Ÿ•‘ The bottom entrance of the tower will be open from 15 minutes before concerts until halfway through the concert or when we reach occupant capacity.
(As of right now, we will NOT be using CampusGroups for signups.)

๐Ÿšง The view from the top (belfry area) is currently closed, but you CAN still watch the chimesmasters play and request your favorite songs!

We missed interacting with you all at our concerts and look forward to seeing you again soon!

The Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium is currently conducting research into the perception and appreciation of carillon music by the general public. This is part of a graduation project put together by Emily Kim under the supervision of Luc Rombouts.

If youโ€™d like to help out with this project, please take the survey below! It will only take 5 minutes to complete and the answers are anonymous. Here is the link: https://forms.gle/4yT1VGWZugNMXG3J7

Because the target audience for this survey is the general public, please do not complete the survey if you are a carillonneur yourself. The survey will be taken down on March 10, so be sure to submit your response before then.

**For clarification, the following survey asks about the carillon (larger instrument that typically has 40-50 bells and can be played with a keyboard) rather than the Cornell Chimes.

Thank you for your time!

This online questionnaire was developed as part of a 2022-2023 thesis project at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium by Emily Kim, under supervision of Luc Rombouts. Its purpose is to get a better understanding of the public perception and appreciation of carillon music. Completing this q...
