✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼Labor Day Closing and Recycling Pickup Schedule

📌The Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management (TCRMM) office and the Recycling and Solid Waste Center (RSWC) will be closed Monday, September 7th, and will reopen Tuesday, September 8th, during regular hours.

♻️There will be no curbside recycling collection on Monday, September 7th. Recycling pickup will occur one day later than usual for the remainder of the holiday week.

🍌Participants of the Fork ‘em Over: Curbside food scraps recycling pilot will follow the normal collection schedule with pickup occurring Wednesday September 9th and Thursday September 10th.

Sport Swap is TOMORROW at YMCA Ithaca!
Come to our free community swap event on August 20, 12–3pm in
the YMCA pavilion. We already have a lot of gently used sports equipment donations.

Whether you’re trying a new sport or gearing up for
next season, you won’t want to miss it. Anyone can
participate, and kids are welcome.

You don't need to bring anything to participate! FREE!

⊹ Final 30 minutes (2:30–3pm) open to local
organizations for bulk pickup

🦺 New safety requirement at the RSWC! As of August 1, 2026, everyone entering the tip floors will need to wear a high visibility (hi-vis) vest.

The tip floor is a busy space with trucks and equipment on the move, and this simple step helps keep everyone visible and safe.

Note: this requirement is for the tip floor only — the recycling and electronics dropoff areas are not affected.

Seeking donations for our Sports Swap! Spread the word!

Sport Swap is coming to the YMCA!
We’re collecting gently used sporting equipment for our free community swap event on August 20, 12–3pm in the YMCA pavilion. Look for the donation bin in the lobby starting July 30!

Whether you’re trying a new sport or gearing up for next season, you won’t want to miss it. Anyone can participate, and kids are welcome.

10,000 pounds. That’s a lot of food scraps.

We’re pretty proud of this one.

Shared Kitchen Ithaca was recently featured by Tompkins County Recycling and Materials Management’s ReBusiness program for the food scraps recycling system we put in place at the kitchen.

Since September, our members have helped divert more than 10,000 pounds of food scraps from the landfill. Instead, those scraps are collected by Natural Upcycling and taken to Cayuga Compost, where they get turned into something useful again.

It’s a pretty simple system—yellow buckets at the prep stations, a larger collection cart outside, and a little bit of cooperation from everyone who uses the kitchen. But with dozens of food businesses working in one space, those little things add up fast.

Sustainability isn’t always about doing something huge. Sometimes it’s just building better habits into the way we work every day.

A big thank you to our members for making the system work, and to the ReBusiness Partners Program for helping us get it started.

10,000 pounds down. We’ll keep going.

New Guide + New Recycling Update!

Our 2026–2027 Curbside Recycling Guidelines are now available.

And the big news: Paper cups can now be recycled curbside in Tompkins County!

Remember:
• Paper cups must be empty
• NO Styrofoam cups
• Remove straws and lids
• NO food and beverage cartons such as milk, juice, and soup boxes

🎆Independence Day Closing and Recycling Pickup Schedule

The Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management (TCRMM) office will be closed Friday, July 3rd, and will reopen Monday, July 6th, during regular hours.

The Recycling and Solid Waste Center (RSWC) will remain open as usual on Friday, July 3rd, however it will be closed on Saturday, July 4th.

There will be curbside recycling collection on Friday, July 3rd. Recycling pickup will occur as usual for the duration of the week.

Food Scraps Drop Spots will be closed on Saturday, July 4th and remain open as usual on Sunday, July 5th.
