EAA Chapter 811

EAA Chapter 811 Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 811 - an organization of aircraft owners and enthusiasts in and around Ithaca, NY. See calendar for details.

We meet fourth Tuesday of each month (usually) at the Ithaca-Tompkins International Airport (KITH). EAA Chapter 811 is a local chapter of the national Experimental Aircraft Association or EAA. Our members are interested in all aspects of recreational flying and airplanes - homebuilding or restoring aircraft, or just getting out to take to the air. The Chapter meets once a month - usually on the la

st Tuesday at 7:00PM at the Ithaca Airport, but during the nicer months we often have fly-in picnics or barbecues at airports around the area. We also sponsor several Young Eagles Rallies each year to give free airplane rides to kids 8-17 years old. Everyone is welcome in EAA Chapter 811, whether you've got your pilot's license or are a student - or just like airplanes!

It is with regret to announce that Owasco Airfield and the Owasco Hill RV Campground have been sold. The Airport and Campground are officially closed. The airfield operated for twenty one years and hosted many popular public events. Thank you to the EAA clubs, pilots, and everyone who was a part of the Airfield and to the many campers who camped at the Campground. We will miss you all.

Chapter 811 has a Young Eagles Rally coming up on Saturday May 30th (rain date Sunday May 31st). As of today (Saturday, May 9th) we have 15 Young Eagles registered and six pilots (Tim Fallon, Chris Hansen, Mark Sanford and Art Snyder sharing one airplane, Jack Thompson, Jim Wells and me). Doug Binder has signed up to help as ground crew. If you can help out, either to fly or doing paperwork or safety briefings/preflight introductions on the ground, please let me know.

If you know anyone who might want to arrange a Young Eagle flight during the rally, they can register through the EAA system at https://www.eaachapters.org/event-details/IN3232CS6

Our May gathering will be a fly-out brunch at Katy’s Fly-in Restaurant at Great Valley Airport N56 on May 16th (May 17th in case of rain). We’ll plan to arrive at N56 at 10:00. Katy’s page is https://www.facebook.com/Katysflyin/ and their phone number is (716) 265-2040

Great Valley N56 is 99 miles due west of KITH, about 12 miles west of Olean KOLE and 20 miles east of Jamestown VOR.

N56 is at 1,450’ elevation. It has a grass runway 6/24 which is 3,200 feet long by 90 feet wide. The parking area is east of the northeastern end of the runway (approach end of 24), and Katy’s is directly across the road from the airplane parking.
N56 has a CTAF of 122.9. The nearest AWOS is at KOLE – 118.375.

If you’re planning to go to the fly-out brunch, please let me know by Thursday evening so I can call Katy’s on Friday to give them a “heads up”. If you’d like to ride with another pilot, let me know that, too, and I’ll try to arrange it. I’ll have a couple of seats in my 172, if nothing else.

Our February gathering for Chapter 811 is next Tuesday, February 24th. The topic for our meeting is a timely one – “the new MOSAIC rules and what they mean for you”. Our Chapter Secretary-Treasurer Mark Sanford will be arranging for a guest speaker to explain the rules to us, and how they will apply to our flying in our own (and Club) airplanes.

In case you aren’t familiar with the program, the MOSAIC (acronym for “Modernization Of Special AIrworthiness Certification”) rule, which became effective October 22, 2025, fundamentally shifted Sport Aircraft requirements from weight-based limits to performance-based standards. The most relevant part of the program for us allows pilots exercising Sport Pilot privileges to fly up to 4-seat aircraft (although with only two seats occupied), as long as they have clean stall speeds of no more than 59 knots, with no practical limits on weight or maximum airspeed. In effect, under these rules, a Sport Pilot or a Private Pilot exercising Sport Pilot Privileges (i.e. drivers license instead of FAA medical or Basic Med) can fly pretty much any “regular” 2- or 4-place GA airplane – a Cessna 172 or 182, or Piper PA28, and so on – so long as it meets the stall speed requirement (and isn’t turbo-jet powered). Retractable gear and controllable-pitch props and night flight are all allowed, with endorsements from an instructor. The rules get a bit confusing, in that the same MOSAIC program also changed the rules for certification of new LSA designs, with a different stall speed requirement (61knots) – but these changes wouldn’t affect anyone flying an older aircraft. Effectively, MOSAIC decoupled the definitions of Sport Pilot privileges from Light Sport Aircraft definitions.

How will this new system effect you, as a pilot? How will it effect owners or renters of aircraft which now qualify to be flown by Sport Pilots? Come to the meeting and find out.

As usual, we’ll be meeting at 18:30 at the East Hill Flying Club (62 Brown Road, Ithaca 14850) for snacks and pilot talk, with the presentation starting at 19:00 sharp.

If you can’t make it to the Flying Club, we’ll have a Zoom option. Unfortunately, if you Zoom in, refreshments won’t be provided. If you need the link, send me a PM or e-mail [email protected] and I'll send it to you.

I hope you’ll be able to attend either in person or virtually via Zoom.

While I’ve got you, don’t forget the VMC Club meeting on Wednesday, February 25th, at 7:00PM at the Flying Club. The same Zoom link will work for the VMC meeting.

Dansville KDSV is a favorite destination for $100 Hamburgers. Recently the construction business just off the end of the runway 14 has started using 100' tall cranes directly in line with the runway, which poses a danger to landing aircraft. According to this story the airport has been closing the runway for up to three hours a day because of the cranes - but I'm not sure how you'd get that information. Maybe it's on the ASOS, but the story doesn't say. Pilots should be especially careful there until this situation is resolved.
See https://www.whec.com/top-news/standoff-in-north-dansville-as-large-cranes-near-airport-cause-safety-hazard-for-pilots/ for details.

NORTH DANSVILLE, N.Y. — A stand-off is underway in the town of North Dansville over the protected airspace near the municipal airport. Large construction cranes, used by a nearby business, are causing a serious hazard and the FAA is threatening to pull federal funds if the cranes aren’t moved.La...

Our October gathering will be held one week from today, Tuesday, October 28th. As usual, we’ll gather at 6:30PM for pilot talk and snacks, with the program beginning promptly at 7:00PM.

Our program this month will be presented by Chapter 811 member Jim Wells, who will talk about his brand-new 1948 Aeronca Sedan. This has been a multi-year project to restore this classic four-place taildragger to better-than-new condition. Jim flew the Sedan to our September gathering at Jack Henion’s airstrip – that’s where I took the photos at right – and I’ve heard him flying around the area many times since then. This should be an interesting program, and I hope you’ll all turn out to hear the talk.
