This year is America 250, but it’s also JEMIMA 250, or Publick Friend 250. In 1776, after a severe illness, Jemima Wilkinson announced that she had died, and that her body was reanimated, neither male nor female, as the Publick Universal Friend. She was an offbeat person, but also one of the founding figures of initial European occupation in the Keuka-Seneca area, where she fostered agriculture and developed water-powered factories. Tonight at 4 PM, Tricia Noel of Yates County History Center will join us at Bath fire hall for a free presentation on the Friend. All are welcome! Did you know that most people who helped on the Underground Railroad were formerly enslaved people? John Thomas, pictured here around 1899, was born into slavery in Virginia. He escaped, settled in Penn Yan, married and raised ten children, and helped dozens of freedom seekers through Yates County to points north. He lived to be over 90 years old.

We love to see those exhibits out and about!

During the month of October, the Becker Mansion is hosting a traveling exhibit titled "Two Hundred Years on the Erie Canal," to celebrate the bicentennial of the waterway's opening. Along with the exhibit panels, we have a display of photographs of our local Cayuga & Seneca Canal - from the Flats neighborhood that existed alongside it, the factories located along the canal route, the canal's locks and its path, and the canal's transformation during the 1910s.

Stop by the Becker Mansion during our open hours - Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - to see the exhibit and display. The exhibit comes to us courtesy of the Western New York Library Resources Council - WNYLRC, Humanities New York, and the South Central Regional Library Council.
