Registered Student Organization at Cornell University | Premier Non-Partisan Debate and Political Discourse Society
We host debates on public issues with distinguished guests and publish democratic resolutions. Wanting to break from this model and encourage a more inclusive debate of today's political issues, the founders created Cornell Political Union, and wrote bipartisanship into its constitut
ion. Today, Cornell Political Union holds regular meetings for the rigorous discussion and debate of political topics, publishes democratic resolutions on specific issues, and invites distinguished guests to speak to our membership. At our core is a commitment to democracy and compromise; members are expected to remain respectful of all ideologies. DISCUSSION FORMAT
Each meeting of Cornell Political Union follows our unique format to encourage an productive, bipartisan debate of a political topic. First, a guest speaker delivers an approximately 20-25 minute speech, arguing for a specific point or policy. Following the speech, the speaker entertains questions from the audience. Second, the Union hosts an approximately 45 minute debate, moderated by the president to ensure that all perspectives are given equal weight. The secretary takes notes on a blackboard to outline the arguments on both sides. Finally, after debate has been exhausted, the Union votes to approve or disapprove the guest speaker's argument. The resulting democratic resolution is published on our resolutions page with a summary of the discussion. HOW TO JOIN
