Saturday evening at 8:50 p.m., WCSART received a 911 call for a female hiker experiencing a cardiac event on Rock Bridge Trail. The group had provided a location that proved to be inaccurate, resulting in team members having to hike the entirety of the loop to locate them. An EMT, part of our EMS wilderness response unit, assessed the patient and provided care and requested ALS support.

We would like to thank the ALS providers from Cross Medical Response for hiking into our location and providing additional care prior to the carry out commencing. The hiker was then packaged in a stokes basket and carried back to the trailhead where she was transported emergent to Clark Regional Hospital.

Last night, while working an outage during the high wind event, one of our linemen was seriously injured while removing a tree that was lying on a powerline in Wolfe County. The section of tree was catapulted from the powerline and then struck our lineman. We ask that everyone please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks and throughout his recovery process.

We would also like to thank the fast response of Cross Medical, Wolfe County Sheriff Dept and the Wolfe County Volunteer Fire Department that assisted in his evacuation.

This is just another reminder of the dangers our linemen face each and every day.

Don't miss Part 2 of our podcast about the rescue of Scott Hern. After five days of searching, Team Members heard a faint call for help.

The Rescue of Scott Hern: Part 2

After hearing someone calling for help, team member Eric Wolterman raced toward the cry, climbed a steep hill and found Scott, who said, “Thank you so much. Will you give me a hug?” They embraced, and Eric said, “It was the best hug of our lives.” With the assistance of a Kentucky State Police helicopter, the team hoisted Scott out. He was then taken by ambulance to the hospital. News of Scott’s miraculous rescue spread from Kentucky to news outlets around the globe. Here is the link to Part 2 in Apple Podcasts.

At the end of a full day of rope training for 13 WCSART team members at Muir Valley, we received a call for a nearby climber who had taken a fall on a trad route at The Hideout suffering significant injuries. Team members quickly mobilized and responded to the crag and began treating his injuries. Medical support was requested from Breathitt/Wolfe EMS who arrived quickly on scene and transported the subject out of the valley for a Helio transport to definitive care. We wish the climber a speedy recovery.
