NORTHAMPTON COUNTY SHERIFF JACK SMITH OFFERS LABOR DAY TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS FOR THE COMMUNITY

The Labor Day holiday weekend often means heavy traffic on roadways, and increased risk for traffic accidents. Sheriff Jack Smith offers a reminder that you can reduce this risk and keep yourself and others safe on the roadways by following some simple safety tips.

The most important reminder is to always stay vigilant and alert at all times when on the road! Being observant can help you anticipate the actions of other drivers, avoiding collisions or other mishaps whenever possible. Before you embark on a holiday road trip, Sheriff Jack Smith asks that members of the community remember these simple tips:

• Before you hit the road, double check that all car seats and booster seats are properly installed and secure in the vehicle.
• Seatbelts are a requirement, not an option! All passengers must wear a seatbelt. It’s the law!
• While driving, make sure to shift your attention every few seconds, constantly scanning the road ahead and behind you. Conditions can change in the blink of an eye.
• Always signal your intentions with your brake lights, turn signals, horn and/or headlights so that other drivers will see you well before you change course.
• Obey posted speed limits at all times. Speeding endangers you and other drivers.
• Check the weather forecast before you leave. The late summer months can unexpectedly bring heavy rain and strong winds, so be prepared for these types of conditions on the road.
• Never follow another vehicle too closely. Remember that as your speed increases, you will need extra time to bring your vehicle to a stop.
• Never drive drowsy. On long trips, be sure to take frequent breaks or switch drivers when you get tired.
“I want everyone to enjoy the unofficial ‘last weekend of summer.’ So, everyone, please be courteous to other drivers,” Sheriff Jack Smith added. “Simple road rage incidents can escalate quickly, sometimes becoming violent. Don’t ruin your holiday weekend because of a disagreement with another driver. Safer roads in Northampton county start with you!”

9/3/2026 Press Release

On August 27, 2026, Northampton County Sheriff's Office Deputy J. Johnson conducted a traffic stop on a black in color sedan in the 6700 block of NC Highway 46 in Garysburg, NC due to him being familiar with sixty-six-year-old, Stanley Lee Boone, of Garysburg, NC and knowing that his license was revoked.

Stanley Lee Boone was identified as the driver. The other occupants of the motor vehicle were identified as forty-eight-year-old, Monique Danielle Britt, of Garysburg, NC and forty-eight-year-old, Demetrick Lavez Clark, of Garysburg, NC.

Monique Danielle Britt was arrested on an outstanding order for arrest - failure to appear out of Greenville County, VA. The original charge was one (1) count Felony Possess Schedule I/II. Britt failed to appear in Greensville County, VA court on February 12, 2026.

During the traffic stop investigation, Demetrick Lavez Clark admitted that he was in possession of ma*****na. A probable cause search of the motor vehicle resulted in locating and seizing approximately 1 gram of ma*****na and approximately 4 grams of crack co***ne. Demetrick Lavez Clark was arrested and charged with one (1) count Felony Possession of Co***ne, one (1) count Felony Possession with Intent to Sell Deliver Co***ne, and one (1) count Misdemeanor Possess Ma*****na up to ½ oz.

Deputy J. Johnson cited the driver, Stanley Lee Boone, with one (1) infraction No Liability Insurance, one (1) infraction Expired Registration Card/Tag, and one (1) infraction Driving While License Revoked Not Impaired Revocation. Mr. Boone was released.

Monique Danielle Britt was served on the Fugitive - Order for Arrest - Failure to Appear out of Greenville County, VA. Britt did not receive a bond and was provided with a previously scheduled court date of September 3, 2026, in Northampton County.

Demetrick Lavez Clark was served on the aforementioned charges. Clark did not receive a bond due to the pre-trial integrity hold. He was provided a previously schedule court date of August 29, 2026, in Northampton County.

Northampton County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Detective M. Deloatch, and Deputy B. Davis assisted. Garysburg Police Department Lieutenant M. Walton also assisted.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith commended Deputy J. Johnson for his vigilance and diligent effort in this investigation. He further stated that by our deputies removing illegal drugs from circulation can reduce their availability and potential harm to our community.

On August 26, 2026, Northampton County Sheriff's Office Captain W. Phelps and Sergeant J. Velez conducted a traffic stop on a silver in color Infiniti sedan in the area of the 100 block of Pleasant Hill Road Gaston, NC known to be driven by thirty-six-year-old, Jayquan Termaine Cotton, of Gaston, NC, whom had an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Cotton was identified as the driver. Sergeant J. Velez deployed K9 Trigger to start an open-air sniff of the motor vehicle. K9 Trigger alerted to the odor of narcotics being present within the motor vehicle. A probable cause search was conducted. Narcotics were located and seized from within the motor vehicle as a result of the search. The narcotics located and seized included 180.5 grams of powder co***ne, 14.5 grams of crack co***ne, and 15.8 grams of Oxycodone.

In addition to the narcotics, Sergeant J. Velez located and seized a digital scale with white residue, a handgun, four (4) cellphones, and US Currency in the amount of $923.00.

Jayquan Termaine Cotton was served on the outstanding warrant for one (1) count Felony Possession with Intent to Sell Deliver Co***ne. Cotton received a secured bond in the amount of $10,000.00 and was given a previously scheduled court date of August 27, 2026, in Northampton County. This charge is a result of a three (3) month investigation lead by Captain W. Phelps and Sergeant J. Velez. Captain W. Phelps obtained the warrant for arrest on August 11, 2026.

Sergeant J. Velez charged and served Jayquan Termaine Cotton on two (2) counts Felony Trafficking in Co***ne, one (1) count Felony Possession with Intent to Sell Deliver Co***ne, one (1) count Felony Trafficking O***m or He**in, one (1) count Felony Maintain Vehicle/Dwell/Place Controlled Substances, and one (1) count Misdemeanor Possess Drug Paraphernalia. Cotton received a secured bond in the amount of $50,000.00 and was provided a previously scheduled court date of August 27, 2026, in Northampton County.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith commended Captain W. Phelps and Sergeant J. Velez on their diligent efforts in narcotics investigations and holding those responsible accountable. He further stated that Northampton County Sheriff's Office will continue to strive to reduce access to dangerous drugs to help prevent overdoses, addictions, and other health problems. Illegal drug activity can contribute to violence, theft, and other crimes. Sheriff Smith stated that we must protect our young people and our community members from illegal and dangerous drugs.

On August 27, 2026, Northampton County Sheriff's Office Deputy R. Friedrich responded to Northampton County Courthouse and arrested twenty-nine-year-old, Leroy Lee Riddick Edwards Jr, of Conway, NC on an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Leroy Lee Riddick Edwards Jr was served on one (1) count Felony Possession of Firearm By Felon. He did not receive a bond due to the pre-trial integrity hold. He was provided a previously scheduled court date of August 27, 2026, in Northampton County.

This warrant was obtained on August 14, 2025 by NC State Highway Patrol.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

On August 25, 2026, Northampton County Sheriff's Office Deputy M. Kellett charged and arrested twenty-nine-year-old, Jeremiah Lashley, of Garysburg, NC on one (1) count Misdemeanor Assault on a Female and one (1) count Misdemeanor Carrying Concealed Gun.

Jeremiah Lashley was served on both charges. He did not receive a bond due to 48 - hour domestic violence hold. Lashley was provided a previously scheduled court date of September 3, 2026, in Northampton County.

These charges stem from an investigation led by Deputy M. Kellett for an assault and larceny call that occurred at a residence on Severn Road in Margarettsville, NC on August 25, 2026. The victim had visible injuries to the face. Deputy M. Kellett was able to recover the victim's cellphone that was stolen. During the investigation, Deputy M. Kellett located and seized a concealed handgun from within Lashley's motor vehicle.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith commended Deputy M. Kellett on his swift action and helping to bring justice to the victim. He stated that domestic violence is very serious. It can cause lasting physical, emotional, psychological harm. Northampton County Sheriff's Office will continue to protect victims of domestic violence and seek justice for the victims.

On August 21, 2026, Chief W. Smith with Rich Square Police Department arrested forty-six-year-old, Dameon Latray Lassiter, of Rich Square, NC on an outstanding warrant for arrest and an outstanding order for arrest. Lassiter was turned over to Northampton County Sheriff's Office Sergeant B. White for service of the processes.

Dameon Latray Lassiter was served on the order for arrest - failure to appear. He failed to appear in Northampton County court on August 20, 2026, for an original charge of one (1) count Misdemeanor Intoxicated and Disruptive.

Dameon Latray Lassiter was served on the warrant for arrest to include one (1) count Felony Attempted First Degree Murder and one (1) count Felony Assault with Deadly Weapon Serious Injury. Lassiter did not receive a bond due to the pre-trial integrity hold. He was provided a previously scheduled court date of August 27, 2026, in Northampton County.

Deputy H. Baker assisted in the service of the processes.

The felony charges are a result of an investigation led by Lieutenant Detective M. Deloatch that began on July 31, 2026, when a report of a shooting was called in the area of the 2100 block of US Highway 258 in Rich Square, NC. The victim was shot multiple times and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Lieutenant Detective M. Deloatch identified Dameon Latray Lassiter as a suspect early in the investigation and was able to establish probable cause against Lassiter to obtain the warrant for arrest on August 20, 2026.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith commended all the responding units for their quick action, security of the crime scene, and rendering aid to the victim. Sheriff Jack Smith commended Lt. Det. M. Deloatch for his diligent efforts in this case and helping to bring justice to the victim.

On August 24, 2026, Northampton County Sheriff's Office Deputy G. Prescott arrest twenty-two-year-old, Paris Phoebe Velez, of Seaboard, NC on warrant for arrest out of Newport News, VA and an order for arrest out of Currituck County, NC.

Paris Phoebe Velez was served on the warrant for arrest out of Virginia to include two (2) counts Felony Robbery Using a Firearm. Velez did not receive a bond and was provided a previously scheduled court date of August 27, 2026, in Newport News, VA.

Paris Phoebe Velez was served on the order for arrest for failure to appear out of Currituck County. Paris failed to appear in Currituck County court on June 10, 2026, for an original charge of one (1) count Misdemeanor Possess Ma*****na Up to ½ oz. Paris received a secured bond in the amount of $1,000.00 and was provided a scheduled court date of September 16, 2026, in Currituck County, NC.

Lieutenant W. Whitley, Sergeant A. Burgess, and Deputy E. Voorhis assisted in the arrest.

On August 24, 2026, Northampton County Sheriff's Office Deputy M. Kellett arrested fifty-four-year-old, Stevie Lemont Shoulars, of Rich Square, NC on an outstanding warrant for arrest.

Stevie Lemont Shoulars was served on one (1) count Misdemeanor Larceny. Shoulars did not receive a bond due to the pre-trial integrity hold. He was provided a scheduled court date of September 15, 2026, in Northampton County.

On August 20, 2026, Northampton County Sheriff's Office Deputy H. Baker served fifty-three-year-old, Anthony Tyrone Prince, of Warrenton, NC on an outstanding warrant for arrest out of Warren County, NC. Prince was incarcerated in Northampton County Detention Center at the time of service.

Anthony Tyrone Prince was served on one (1) count Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon Intent to Kill and one (1) count Felony Abuse Disable/Elder Serious Injury. Prince did not receive a bond due to domestic violence hold. He was provided a previously scheduled court date of August 27, 2026, in Warren County.

Ayden Michael Lassiter was served on Order for Arrest - Failure to Appear out of Hertford County. Lassiter failed to appear in Hertford County court on April 14, 2026, for an original charge of one (1) count Misdemeanor Larceny. Lassiter received a secured bond in the amount of $1,000.00 and was provided a previously scheduled court date of August 21, 2026, in Hertford County.
