🚨 SCAM ALERT: WRONG COPS TO CALL! 🚨

We’ve received reports today of scam callers pretending to be local law enforcement. To make the scam more convincing, they’re even spoofing our Sheriff’s Office landline number to make their calls appear legitimate.

But apparently these scammers didn’t check their call list very carefully. Among their targets today? A current Sheriff’s Reserve member and a retired Sheriff. 😂

Let’s just say those calls didn’t go quite as planned!

Here’s what you need to know:
🔹 Scammers can make caller ID display what appears to be our official phone number.
🔹 Don’t assume a call is legitimate just because the number looks familiar.
🔹 Never provide money, gift cards, financial information, or personal information to someone simply because they claim to be in law enforcement.
🔹 If you’re suspicious, hang up and contact our office so we can keep tabs on which type of scam is making its rounds in our area.

The bottom line: If someone calls claiming to be law enforcement and something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and verify before you act.

We appreciate everyone who reports these scams. And to the scammers who called our Reserve member and retired Sheriff today… you might want to do a little more research before your next round of calls. 😉

Sunday AM update: Burn ban continues on Sunday until 6PM

Burning Ban starting tomorrow (Saturday) at 8:00 AM

Due to Saturday’s forecasted critical fire weather conditions and current wildland fuel conditions, including crop fields, the DNR and Sheriff's Office are advising there will be No Open Burning – Campfires allowed on 10/10/26 (Saturday) starting at 8:00 am. Conditions will be reassessed to determine the status on Sunday. Small recreational or cooking campfires are allowed but discouraged.

Anyone who burned piles this week is encouraged to double check them for any holdover heat that could rekindle in tomorrow's windy conditions.

NOW HIRING: POLICE CHIEF

The City of Lakefield, population 1,690, located in Southwest Minnesota, is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for a full-time Police Chief.

Qualifications include:

AA or AS degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or related field
Minnesota POST full-time license
Valid Minnesota Driver’s License, or ability to obtain one
At least five years of experience as a police officer
Supervisory training or employee supervision experience preferred

The successful candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills, the ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other departments, and the ability to perform duties associated with law enforcement, investigations, and community service functions.

Salary Range: $71,801–$92,185, plus benefits, depending on experience and qualifications.

The Lakefield Police Department consists of the Chief, 2 full-time officers, and 2 part-time officers.
