Jackson County Courthouse to Glow Purple in September for Su***de Prevention Awareness Month

Beginning September 1, the Jackson County Courthouse will be illuminated purple each evening throughout the month in recognition of National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. The lighting is intended to raise public awareness of su***de prevention resources and to show support for individuals and families affected by su***de loss.

Purple is widely recognized as the color associated with su***de prevention and awareness. By lighting the courthouse, the City of Jackson joins communities across the country in a visible show of support during September, which is observed nationally as Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

Jackson County’s su***de rate is higher than the state-wide average and is double the rate of the Twin Cities. Su***de remains a leading cause of death in Minnesota and across the nation, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. Organizers hope the lighting will serve as a reminder that help is available and that no one has to face these struggles alone.

Community members are encouraged to:

Check in on friends, family, and neighbors
- Share information about local and national support resources
- Attend the second annual Out of The Darkness walk at Ashley park on September 26th, from 10am to 12pm

Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of su***de can call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7, free and confidential.

The courthouse lighting will remain in place through September 30.

🚨 PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT – KIMBALL TOWNSHIP AREA RESIDENTS

Law enforcement is asking residents in the area of 560th Ave. and 890th St. (Kimball 31) to remain alert following an incident that occurred last night and continued into this morning.

A female suspect was involved in a pursuit involving several neighboring law enforcement agencies. During the pursuit, the suspect drove at extremely high speeds and was ultimately able to evade law enforcement.

This morning, the same vehicle involved in the pursuit was located concealed behind a wind turbine in Kimball Township, Section 31. The driver, a 40 year old female, brown hair, brown eyes, 5'2", and 135 lbs., was not inside the vehicle. The female was later seen entering a cornfield wearing all dark clothing and a dark colored backpack.

Law enforcement established a perimeter and conducted an extensive search using K-9s and drones, but she has not been located.

Law enforcement believes she is on foot and may attempt to obtain help or transportation.

Residents in the area are asked to take the following precautions:

🔒 LOCK YOUR HOME AND GARAGE DOORS, even if you are only stepping outside briefly.

🚗 LOCK YOUR VEHICLES and do not leave keys or key fobs inside unattended vehicles.

👀 Be alert for anyone walking out of the cornfield or in the surrounding area.

📞 If you see her or observe suspicious activity, please call 911 immediately. Provide dispatchers with your location and the direction she is traveling.

The female is believed to have a history of mental-health concerns. This information is being provided so residents understand the circumstances and can help law enforcement safely locate her.

Law enforcement personnel remain actively involved in the investigation.

Residents are encouraged to share this message with neighbors, family members, and others who may be in the affected area.

Parents:

Summer is here and there are a lot of e-bikes and e-scooters in use. We've been receiving a few complaints from motorist, including another one this morning, of kids operating them in an unsafe manner. Examples of the complaints include travelling through stop signs at high speeds, exiting alleys onto streets without looking for vehicle cross traffic, and operating them on sidewalks. Several callers have stated it was a "close call" where the youth was nearly struck by a vehicle.

Minnesota trauma centers have reported an alarming surge in e-scooter and e-bike injuries, with emergency department admissions rising significantly. We are asking parents to educate and equip your children to address this growing safety concern. Because minors account for a large portion of severe e-scooter injuries, parental intervention is the most effective line of defense. Deputies will also be increasing education and enforcement efforts regarding these motorized foot scooters and e-bikes.

Here are the e-bike and e-scooter laws in MN:
