Parents:
Summer is here and there are a lot of e-bikes and e-scooters in use. We've been receiving a few complaints from motorist, including another one this morning, of kids operating them in an unsafe manner. Examples of the complaints include travelling through stop signs at high speeds, exiting alleys onto streets without looking for vehicle cross traffic, and operating them on sidewalks. Several callers have stated it was a "close call" where the youth was nearly struck by a vehicle.
Minnesota trauma centers have reported an alarming surge in e-scooter and e-bike injuries, with emergency department admissions rising significantly. We are asking parents to educate and equip your children to address this growing safety concern. Because minors account for a large portion of severe e-scooter injuries, parental intervention is the most effective line of defense. Deputies will also be increasing education and enforcement efforts regarding these motorized foot scooters and e-bikes.
