𝐄-𝐁𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞⁣⁣

On Thursday, June 4th at 7:23pm, Jackson officers were dispatched to a personal injury accident on Hwy 60 at Jackson Drive involving an e-bike and a motor vehicle. The operator of the e-bike struck a vehicle turning right on a green light as the e-bike operator passed stopped traffic on the right shoulder. The operator was treated and released at a local hospital, but this collision was feet, if not inches, away from being a deadly tragedy. The e-bike operator forfeited their right-of-way by utilizing a non-travel lane (the shoulder) to pass stopped vehicles at an active intersection, making them the striking vehicle and the primary cause of the collision.⁣⁣

While e-bikes are a great way to get around, it’s critical to remember that under Wisconsin law, e-bike operators have the exact same rights—and the 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬—as motor vehicle drivers.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Attempting to pass a vehicle on the right at an active intersection is dangerous and a violation of traffic laws.⁣⁣

• 𝐍𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫: Under 𝐖𝐢𝐬. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭. § 𝟑𝟒𝟔.𝟎𝟖, you can only pass a vehicle on the right if they are making a left turn, or if there is a dedicated, lawful second lane. Bypassing traffic on the shoulder at an intersection is illegal.⁣⁣

• 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐮𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞: 𝐖𝐢𝐬. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭. § 𝟑𝟒𝟔.𝟖𝟎(𝟐)(𝐜) explicitly requires bicycle and e-bike riders to use extra care and caution when passing any stopped or moving vehicle.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝐄-𝐁𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬:⁣⁣

• 𝐁𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Do not ride on the shoulder to skip ahead of stopped traffic at intersections. Wait your turn in line just like a car.⁣⁣

• 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬: If you are approaching an intersection, look closely at the front vehicles' turn signals. Assume they cannot see you in their passenger-side mirror.⁣⁣

• 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝: E-bikes do not qualify as “motor vehicles” under Wisconsin law; you cannot get an OWI on a legal e-bike. That said, just because OWI doesn't apply doesn't mean anything goes. E-bikes are considered vehicles under the rules of the road. If an e-bike is operated carelessly or endangers others, the rider can face charges of Reckless Driving . If an injury or death occurs, riders could also face severe criminal charges like Recklessly Endangering Safety.⁣⁣

Update: The cause of the crash was determined to be the result of a medical condition. The driver was treated and released. The scene has been cleared and the roadway is open.

Motor Vehicle Crash at Jackson Elementary School

JPD and JFD are currently on scene of a single-vehicle crash on the Jackson Elementary School property. No students or staff were injured, and there is no threat to the school. The incident remains under investigation. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

A few quick reminders to protect yourself:

🔒 Lock your doors — every time
👀 Don’t leave valuables in plain sight
🚫 Never leave a firearm unsecured in your vehicle

Please remember that a glovebox or hidden under the seat is not a safe storage option for a firearm.

🚨 SCAM ALERT: “You’ve Won the Lottery/Publisher Clearing House Winner” Letters Are Still Circulating 🚨

If you receive a letter, email, text, or phone call claiming you won a huge prize from a lottery or sweepstakes you never entered — it’s almost certainly a scam.

We had a community member stop by yesterday with this letter that also included a fake check which he was instructed to cash to "help cover the cost of the taxes". What they want you to do is cash the check, withdraw and send them the money before your bank notifies you the check is fraudulent. Now you are responsible to cover the amount of money you withdrew from the bank.

Scammers often use fake logos, official-sounding language, and urgent deadlines to pressure people into sending money or personal information.

⚠️ Common Warning Signs of a Lottery/Sweepstakes Scam:

❌ You’re told you won a prize for a contest you never entered
❌ They ask you to pay “fees,” “taxes,” or “processing costs” before receiving winnings
❌ They pressure you to act immediately or keep it secret
❌ The message contains spelling mistakes, poor grammar, or suspicious formatting
❌ They ask for banking details, ID numbers, or copies of personal documents
❌ They request payment through wire transfer, gift cards, crypto, or cash deposits
❌ The contact information looks suspicious or doesn’t match the real company
❌ The prize amount is unusually large and “too good to be true”
❌ The letter includes a check they want you to deposit and later withdraw to pay them.

🛑 Remember:
Legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes do NOT require upfront payments to claim winnings.

✅ How to Protect Yourself:
• Never send money to claim a prize
• Do not share personal or banking information
• Verify the company through official sources
• Talk to a trusted friend or family member before responding
• Report scams to your local consumer protection agency or fraud reporting center

Before you abandon your vehicle to find some sweet deals at the rummage sales tomorrow and Saturday, here's your friendly reminder of some basic parking rules:

🔥Fire Hydrant - Park at least 10 feet away
🚘 Driveway Entrance - Leave at least 4 feet of space
🚶🏼‍♀️🛑 Crosswalk or Intersection - Don't park within 15 feet
🚦Hwy 60 - No parking on the north side (and only park on the south side after DPW has covered the no parking signs that are normally there!)

Basically, if your car is hugging a hydrant, blocking someone's driveway, or creeping into the crosswalk...rethink the spot. Also make sure you pay attention to no parking signs; officers will be issuing citations for violations.

Park smart, avoid tickets, and find those deals!

The village received a number of complaints about solicitors over the past weekend.

Our department issued a citation to Moxie Pest Control at approximately 2:20pm this afternoon. The company supervisor was explicitly warned to discontinue solicitation in the Village until permits were obtained. Please contact our department if additional violations are observed. (262)677-4949

As a reminder, approved peddlers may only solicit between 9am and 30 minutes prior to sundown, must display the village permit conspicuously, and must obey "No soliciting" signs.

Last week K9 Delta and Ofc. Trevarthen attended the Jessiffany Canine Services Spring Games & Certification Event. K9 Delta and Ofc. Trevarthen competed in 12 different events with more than 50 other K9 teams.

K9 Delta and Ofc. Trevarthen earned 1st place in luggage detection, 2nd place in building search for man, and came in 9th place overall! K9 Delta's certification through the American Police Canine Association was also renewed.

🎓 Two Jackson PD Recruits Graduate from the Police Academy

Recruit Officers Josh Wolf and Eric Harding have officially graduated from the Police Recruit Academy at Waukesha County Technical College after successfully completing the intensive 18-week training program.

Both officers will now begin field training as they continue their journey serving the Village of Jackson community.
