When someone comes to stay at Jackson Interfaith Shelter, securing a job—if they don’t already have one—is one of the first things we help them work toward. We’re grateful for Michigan Works Southeast, an organization working to connect job seekers with employment opportunities in their area. Establishing consistent income and saving that income toward a down payment on an apartment is crucial.

Michigan Works! Southeast recently shared that there are 836 active job openings in Jackson County right now. Their Career Advisors are available to meet with job seekers and guide them in their journey to employment. For individuals enrolled in their MSWE program, they help them overcome any barriers which keep them from gainful employment, such as further training, obtaining a high school diploma, resume and computer workshops, interview clothing allowance, daycare assistance and even help with rent, utilities or transportation when available.

If you or someone you know is looking for work, we encourage you to contact Michigan Works! Southeast, today. Their friendly and knowledgeable team members are eager to connect you to great career opportunities. You can also search jobs directly through their website: https://www.mitalent.org/

We LOVE our Golden Girls! This amazing crew has been serving at the shelter for over 30 years. Though the faces have changed over the years, their group faithfully shows up twice a month to prepare and serve lunch for those who turn to the shelter for a meal. This is what community looks like, and we are so blessed by them. ❤

Fresh blueberry muffins were on the menu for this week's cooking class, hosted by one of our Food Service Coordinators, Mikey! 🫐

Clients learned to make muffins from scratch while practicing measuring techniques, combining dry and wet ingredients, and following a recipe. They also had the opportunity to compare traditional and gluten-free flour and learn how they affect texture and taste. It was a delicious way to build skills and confidence in the kitchen.

The generosity of our community never ceases to amaze us. As needs change throughout the year, we've updated our wishlist with some of the items that would be most helpful right now. Thank you for helping us care for those who turn to the shelter for support.

You’ll also see some $10 gift cards included. We use these as small rewards when individuals reach milestones within their Progress Plans.

If it’s easier, you can shop directly from our Amazon wishlist and have items shipped to the shelter:

We have some new original art to display around here! We love having Jackson School of the Arts at the shelter. Lizzie did a wonderful job sharing the beauty of watercolors at our most recent class. Look how beautiful some of the final pieces turned out 🎨

📣 Summer is here so it’s time to share this important reminder. If you have leftover catered food from open houses, wedding receptions or other events, we are always very grateful to receive those leftovers. We are currently serving nearly 7,500 meals per month and your food donations are a big help to our kitchen team!

Please note:
⏰ It is best to drop it off immediately after your event, or within three days if it has been stored in the proper temperature in the meantime.
📞 It is not necessary to call before hand, but feel free to reach out and let us know you’re on your way.
🥦 We always welcome extras from your garden!
🧊 Frozen food is acceptable, too.

Thanks for helping to spread the word! If you have specific questions about a donation, please send us a direct message or call (517) 789-8735.

Exciting progress is continuing on our Family Shelter project, which means it’s time to renovate our main parking lot! For the next few weeks, our parking lot will be temporarily closed. Volunteers, visitors, and service partners are encouraged to use street parking where permitted or park a block away at 300 S. Blackstone St. (the former Center for Family Health clinic location).

Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and continued support during this exciting season of growth!

Every semester, we’re grateful to welcome interns into the life and ministry of Jackson Interfaith Shelter! We’re committed to providing a well-rounded experience that gives students and future professionals the opportunity to see and be part of all aspects of this work.

Interns at JIS are involved in the day to day life of the shelter, from learning how to complete intakes and work the front desk to serving meals and building relationships with those we serve. Many of our interns have gone on to become part of the JIS family, whether by picking up shifts or joining our team full time, and we’re so grateful for the impact they’ve made along the way!

Interested in learning more or completing an internship with us? We currently have openings for the fall semester! Visit our website at interfaithshelter.com/internship to inquire.
