Today, the State Board of Education (SBE) recognized Limeul Eubanks for being named the 2026 National Art Education Association (NAEA) Southeastern Region Supervision and Administration Art Educator of the Year.

Eubanks is the PreK-12 State Arts and World Languages Director in the Mississippi Department of Education’s (MDE) Office of Curriculum and Instruction. He has served MDE for more than 18 years overseeing statewide programs in Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, World Languages, and the Mississippi Seal of Biliteracy. The NAEA recognition reflects his individual excellence as well as Mississippi’s growing strength in arts education.

The NAEA is the leading professional organization for art educators in the United States. It is dedicated to advancing art education through professional development, service, and policy. Each year, NAEA recognizes outstanding educators across its regions for their contributions to the field.

The Southeastern Region encompasses Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is one of the most competitive regions in the nation for this award.

Today, the State Board of Education (SBE) recognized Melanie Davis-Hardy, a sixth-grade math and science teacher at Yazoo County Middle School in the Yazoo County School District, for being named the 2026 Mississippi Rural Teacher of the Year.

The Rural Teacher of the Year Award recognizes and honors outstanding teachers who have made significant contributions to rural education statewide. This year, Davis-Hardy was selected from four finalists, each representing one of Mississippi’s congressional districts. She is also a member of the Mississippi Teacher Advisory Council.

As the 2026 Mississippi Rural Teacher of the Year, she will serve as an ambassador for rural education and represent Mississippi at the National Rural Education Association (NREA) Conference, where the nation’s top rural teacher will be named.

Davis-Hardy is dedicated to connecting with students and their families to foster a team approach to student success. She understands the unique strengths of rural schools, which include deep community ties and lasting relationships, and leverages those connections to expand her students’ horizons.

The Mississippi Rural Education Association (MSREA) is a partnership between Mississippi State University’s Social Science Research Center and William Carey University’s Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools. The MSREA is a state affiliate of the NREA and serves as a professional organization for rural education leaders and advocates across Mississippi.

Today, MDE announced that six Mississippi students have been named 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars semifinalists. The program honors the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

Save the Date📌 The Mississippi Literacy Association, in partnership with MDE’s Division of Literacy and the North Mississippi Education Consortium, will host the 55th Annual Mississippi Literacy Association Conference, Turn the Page: Transforming Literacy One Page at a Time from Dec. 2-4, at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi. The conference will highlight high-quality literacy practices for K-8 grade educators.
