National Forests in Mississippi

National Forests in Mississippi The National Forests in Mississippi consists of 1.2 million acres of the state’s most beautiful landscapes. Come for the wild and scenic areas. Come play.

Visitors can hunt, fish, camp, swim, canoe, hike, picnic, ride horses or simply enjoy some green space. Forests are teeming with wildlife, water, trees, flowers and interesting plants. The 2,000 acres of lakes and ponds, 600 miles of fishable streams and 90 miles of off-road trails add up to an amazing outdoor destination. Hunt for white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail and wild turkey. Come relax. And

enjoy the great outdoors at any of Mississippi’s seven ranger districts —the Bienville, Chickasawhay, Delta, De Soto, Holly Springs, Homochitto and Tombigbee.

“The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests. http://www.nationalforests.org/”

The Forest Service manages a system of 154 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000 employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, grazing, fish, and wildlife. Celebrate National Trails Day with us on June 6, 2026! The Forest Service is waiving standard amenity fees to help everyone get outside and enjoy our nation’s trails. We’re spotlighting the incredible work of Forest Service staff, partners, and volunteers who keep more than 165,000 miles of trails safe and accessible.

Volunteers help maintain over half of our trail system—including nearly 26,000 miles in 2025 alone! Want to make a difference? Join a volunteer event or sign up for the Adopt‑a‑Trail program to help care for your favorite trails. Let’s celebrate, explore, and give back to the places we love. 🌲🏞️
