From exploring music around the world to performing for their classmates, JPEC music students have had a busy start to the year. We asked Mrs. Vergara-Bird to share what’s happening in her classroom—and what she hopes students take away from it.
General music students have been exploring music and cultures around the world. High school students researched the music and history of different countries and presented their findings to classmates. Sixth graders have explored music from the United States, Europe, China, India, and Mexico.
Through these lessons, Mrs. VB encourages students to listen with an open mind, discover unfamiliar styles, and understand how music connects to culture.
“I am passionate about creating a music community that celebrates individuality so that every student feels seen and appreciated.”
Meanwhile, both bands are reviewing pitch, rhythm, and music notation while working with Mrs. VB to choose pieces for the Winter Concert.
The symphonic band’s pep rally performance gave students a chance to learn pep music and play for their peers. With a crowd, noise, and distractions, it also provided valuable experience performing outside the classroom.
Students applied the posture, breathing, tone, and articulation skills they’ve been practicing during warm-ups.
“I am so impressed with the way that the band has improved in just the first few weeks of school,” Mrs. VB shared.
Next up for general music students: learning music notation and playing bucket drums! Music classes will also attend a Jackson Symphony Orchestra concert on November 13 during the school day to experience live music and professional musicians.
Mrs. VB plans to bring in guest teachers and local clinicians to help students grow as performers. Future fundraisers will support instruments, music, and field trips as the program continues to expand.
Families can support that growth by attending performances throughout the year—including our Winter Band Concert on December 8 at the Potter Center.
