All Welty House tours are guided, and tour times are 9 and 11 a.m. & 1 and 3 p.m. — walk-ups are always welcome, but reservations are recommended. Happy Birthday to Mildred Wolfe, born in 1915!

Along with her husband and fellow artist Karl Wolfe, Mildred founded The Wolfe Studio in 1946 and for eighty years, the studio has remained a gathering place for artists and creatives in Jackson.

In 1994, Eudora Welty spoke at the Mississippi Museum of Art in conjunction with an exhibition of Mildred Wolfe's paintings. The exhibition included one of the three portraits of Welty's parents that she had commissioned from Wolfe. Having known and admired Mildred for more than forty years, Welty welcomed the opportunity to celebrate both her friend and her work.

Today, Wolfe Studio, operated by Karl and Mildred's daughter, Bebe Wolfe, continues the family's artistic legacy from its original location off Old Canton Road near Highland Village. Stop by to explore the gallery, watch artists at work, and learn more about the Wolfe family's creative legacy.

Happy Birthday to Walter Andrews Welty, the youngest of Eudora Welty's two brothers, born in 1915!

In One Writer's Beginnings, Welty wrote, "Walter grew up to be the most serious in his expression of the three of us, and remained the calmest—the one who most took after our father."

Of course, Walter had his adventurous moments as a child. Welty later recalled that he "was locked into the basement once by Edward, who had grown tired of being followed around; but our little brother found the ax and made a good start on chopping himself a hole through the bottom of the door before rescue came."

in 2004, the Eudora Welty House was designated a National Historic Landmark!

In 1925, Christian Welty and his wife, Chestina, moved into a Tudor Revival-style house at 1119 Pinehurst with their three children. The eldest was Eudora Welty, who was 16 years old at the time. Despite an adventurous life filled with travel, Welty always returned to her home in Jackson and continued to live in the house her father built until her death in 2001. The Welty House on Pinehurst is where all of Miss Welty’s major literary works were written, and in 1986, she deeded her home to the Mississippi Department of Archives & History to ensure its preservation.

Today, the Welty House remains one of the most intact literary house museums in the country, offering visitors a glimpse into a day in the life of a writer during the height of Welty’s career. Schedule a guided tour of the Welty House and walk through one writer’s world—a place that continues to inspire a life of creativity and friendship.

Mark your calendars! Welty at Home returns on September 14 with a special bonus session featuring author Ralph Eubanks, who will appear at the 2026 Mississippi Book Festival later that month. Ralph will join us to discuss his latest book, "When It’s Darkness on the Delta."

Then, on September 28, our next series discussing Eudora Welty’s "The Golden Apples" will begin. We will read and discuss one story from the collection each week, take a brief fall break on October 26, and conclude the series on November 23. Discussions take place at noon CST and are led by Suzanne Marrs, Eudora Welty’s friend and biographer.
