Jackson Police Department

Jackson Police Department Police Chief Brett Hinsch. Jackson Police Department 199 Portsmouth Street, Jackson, Oh 45640 The administration division is comprised of a Chief.

The Jackson Police Department currently operates with a staff of 16 employees, including 10 full-time commissioned police officers. The patrol division has four sergeants and five patrol officers, with one officer working as investigators. One officer operate as a K-9 Unit. Our department also has five communications officers, and one secretary. Road officers work four 10 hour shifts a week in a s

taggered, "overlay" fashion, allowing for extra coverage during peak call times and days. Communications personnel, administrators and our secretary work the more traditional 8 hour shift. One patrol officer and one communications officer are assigned as fill-in personnel, covering both scheduled and emergency time off shifts for other employees. These positions greatly reduce the amount of forced overtime and allow for additional scheduling flexibility. When not covering vacations, holidays or sick leave, the fill-in employees are assigned as additional staffing during peak times. There is a 10 officer volunteer police auxiliary unit within the patrol division.

MEDIA RELEASE
May 5, 2024 4:15 P.M.

On May 3, 2024 at 9:20 A.M. Jackson P.D. received a call from a City of Jackson Water Department employee who witnessed two vehicles approach the intersection of High Street at Wood Avenue. At the intersection both vehicles stopped and an argument between occupants of both vehicles occurred. One of the vehicles pulled away heading North on High Street and the second vehicle followed. It was reported that occupants from one of the vehicles fired shots from a handgun in the direction of the other vehicle as they left the intersection. Both sped North on High Street and turned East onto Main Street. One of the vehicles continued on Main Street to Bridge Street where they turned off of Main and left the area. The second pursuing vehicle turned around and then also left the immediate area.

Officers arrived in the area of the shots fired call a short time later and found shell casings near the intersection. It was unclear at that time which vehicle had an occupant discharging a firearm. A review of some camera footage helped narrow down the vehicles involved. Both vehicles had multiple occupants.

JPD continues to investigate the incident, all involved parties had been identified as of this media release. Both vehicles have been located. We continue to sort through the events of this reckless incident. Interviews are being conducted and evidence is still being gathered. Once the investigation is concluded, we will consult with the Jackson County Prosecutor.

This incident was short in nature and although reckless and dangerous, no one was injured in the altercation. We will continue to investigate the circumstances of this event.

I want to get this out early to the residents and businesses of the City of Jackson. We will be taking a more active approach to streets being illegally blocked off to reserve parking on the streets during the time of the Jackson County Apple Festival. Street parking is public parking and regardless of the proximity to your property, you don’t own it or get to control who may park there. In years past we have seen cones, chairs, ropes, recycling bins, saw horses etc. placed in front of houses and businesses to “reserve” the space for parking. This is illegal and will be enforced. Any street obstruction will be impounded and citations may be issued. Please see the attached ordinance that has an ORC equivalent. Also, please be respectful of other’s private property and do not park without permission. Please be mindful not to park in front of driveways. JPD spends so much time during the Apple Festival answering parking complaints that could be easily avoided if everyone just took the time to be mindful and respectful.
