No child care can mean no paycheck.

When reliable, affordable child care isn’t available, parents may have to miss shifts, reduce their hours, or leave the workforce altogether. For families — households earning above the Federal Poverty Level but less than the cost of basic necessities —even one missed paycheck can make it harder to afford housing, food, transportation, and other essentials.

The Tyson Learning Center in Humboldt offers one example of how employers can help address this barrier. Created exclusively for children of Tyson team members, the center serves ages 6 weeks to 5 years and operates from 4am-5:30pm to accommodate working families and early shifts.

Although one center cannot meet the entire county’s need, it demonstrates how businesses can invest in both their employees and the strength of the local workforce. Employers can support ALICE by exploring child-care partnerships, employee subsidies, flexible scheduling, or on-site care.

Tennessee has lost one of its own. 💔

Dolly Parton will forever be remembered for the music she gave the world, but here at home, her legacy is also one of extraordinary generosity, compassion, and a belief in the potential of every person.

Born into a large family with limited means in the mountains of East Tennessee, Dolly understood what it meant to grow up in circumstances familiar to many ALICE families today — working hard, dreaming big, and building a life beyond the limitations of where you began.

And when she found success, she gave back.

Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a program she started in her home county of Sevier County, she turned her belief in literacy into action. Inspired in part by her father, who never learned to read or write, Dolly helped put hundreds of millions of books into the hands of children, giving them the opportunity to dream, learn, and imagine a bigger future.

Her generosity reached far beyond literacy. Again and again, Dolly used what she had earned to lift up others — children and families, neighbors facing hardship, and communities in need. Her philanthropy reflected something deeply Tennessean and something we believe deeply at United Way: everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Dolly never forgot where she came from. Instead, she spent a lifetime making where she came from better.

Today, we join Tennesseans in mourning an icon, a philanthropist, a neighbor, and one of our own. Her legacy reminds us that the greatest measure of success may be what we do with it for others.

Thank you, Dolly, for showing us just how much good one person can put into the world. We will always love you. ❤️
